minus the bear is probably one of the most hyped up mediocre bands in the music circuit right now.

i don't understand why anyone likes them.

i don't understand why anyone likes them.

because they're not actually mediocre. they have a unique sound, and despite some reviewers accusing them of being unoriginal i have yet to find the similarities between all the other bands they've supposedly ripped off.

they've got good lyrics and musicians that are talented without overplaying. no problems with them.

i totally agree. i love the lyrics in I'm Totally Not Down With Rob's Alien and i love their guitar players style

That said, I really enjoy them.

I have Highly Refined Pirates downloaded, and I went to buy it, but all they had was the remix of Menos El Oso and They Make Beer Commercials Like This, but I didn't feel like paying $10 for a remix cd or an EP. :/

good job, the remixes are pointless. and the EP is good but not ten dollars good.

I've listened through the entirety of Highly Refined Pirates several times and have actually tried to like it and every song is full of the most unmemorable melodies a band could come up with. It's like they sit down and plan how they can make you forget the song as soon as you're finished listening to it.

Just don't like their style.

i'm apparently in the minority but i think Menos El Oso is better, and one of the reasons is because it has more memorable melodies (like the ones you're apparently missing). i'll admit it took me a while to differentiate between songs, but that's happened with a lot of albums i've ended up liking. even though i couldn't tell the difference between the various MTB songs, i still really liked them.

anyway you're a slowcore fan so i dont know why you're so desperate for memorable melodies

I listened to it while chilling on the beach, and it was probably the best decision I've ever made.

i live far away from the beach, but last year my family went to florida on vacation and i got to listen to MTB on the beach... at night.

absolute best atmosphere you could ask for. too bad the band's sound is so location-specific. it also feels good if you're driving, but above all IT MUST BE DARK

sexymuffin

anyway you're a slowcore fan so i dont know why you're so desperate for memorable melodies

well slowcore i listen to primarily for the mood it sets, which is slow, sad, nostalgic etc etc which is why i enjoy most the music i like i suppose

but mtb just doesn't strike me with any feeling and on top of that has very bland melodic patterns so it's just uninteresting :/

YDload
08-12-2007, 12:28 AM
i love nostalgic sounding music which is why i listen to MTB. i dont know where you get the idea that the band has "very bland melodic patterns" when they're incredibly creative, but i guess first impressions could be off by a long shot. after all that's what i thought of the band at first, when all i knew was the name and checked out a few 30-second samples.

sexymuffin

I have listened to Highly Refined Pirates a few times to try and see what it is that people like about them and I still haven't found anything that I like about them. They come off to me as a glossy band with an annoying singer.

I don't like the singer's voice.

he's got one of the least offensive voices ever, especially for the kind of music being played. check out Appleseed Cast or Dismemberment Plan for examples of similar music with more annoying vocals!

dei

I like Dismemberment Plan and I like Travis's voice. The dude from Minus the Bear sounds kinda weird. I don't know, I can't explain what I don't like about his voice.

He sounds like a slightly overweight guy in his mid-30s who wears baseball caps and faded jeans, and lives in a nice Texas apartment where the rooms are big and the walls are white and bare. But he's kind of a dickhead and he drinks too much beer.
