Alright blokes, it's time for some changes to occur. R&M is absolutely shithouse right now, and I'm going to fix it. And I'm starting with this 'ere Community Thread. From now on, I'll be monitoring this as well as I can. You may have noticed a lot of regulars no longer post here, or you may not have because you're new. Needless to say, the old rules that have been abandoned through the carelessness of users and the apathy of we moderators are now back in style.

This means that there are to be:

no more single smiley posts
no more 123 style posts.
no more hottiebassplaying posts
no more idiotic arguments that take up an entire page of posts yet only consist of maybe 30 intelligible words.

In addition, I suggest you all read the Rules that I wrote out so long ago. I know they're corny, that's one of the reasons I stopped enforcing them myself, but I think it's time we brought back a certain standard of posting.

http://www.sputnikmusic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=477098

So, it's time to pick up the posting and try to reverse this cancer that is killing R&M.

P.S. Content-free posts may be deleted without prior discussion by any R&M moderator. If you want to cry about it, go to Everything's****ingFairLand where the razors are always sharp.

P.P.S Looks like I ninja'd your thread again, Jelle.

P.P.P.S I wrote a poem.

Skipping down the sunny side of the street,
I played a happy tune in my silly little head,
When suddenly a funny thought came to me,
Everyone you love will one day be dead.

From the last community thread: where abouts do you live? I'm in north St. Louis suburbs.

And to whoever asked about the humidity: yes. It's a goddamn sauna no matter where you are here.

MX as a whole has gone way downhill over the past couple of years. Only reason I even still come here is the other couple of forums I post/posted at closed or are not music related.

How has it gotten worse? I'm curious as to what's changed so much. (I've only been here for two years and I've only been posting regularly for a year or so).

I've found it kind of annoying lately but I find R&M always goes through ups and downs.

However, whether or not this place has gone downhill is all relative to who your e-buddies were and if they still post here. Obviously nearly all the people from Legions' main era of posting are gone, which might explain why he doesn't enjoy the place anymore. It also has to do with how established you are in the community, I know I started enjoying this place a ****load more when people started taking more notice of me.

Yeah, doing anything you enjoy, everyday for 6 months and then skipping it is tough.

How has it gotten worse? I'm curious as to what's changed so much. (I've only been here for two years and I've only been posting regularly for a year or so).

Just seems like there aren't near as many good posters around anymore. It used to be for every spam post in R&M, there were 10 good posts. Now it seems like it's the other way around. Disagreements were settled with actual debate, conversation or as a last resort "agree to disagree". Now the slightest little thing results in 15 pages of bullshit flaming and spammage. There's a line between regulars just messing around and all out spamming/trolling and it seems that in the past couple of years that line has been utterly trampled.

edit: MX as a whole used to feel like more of a community. The regulars talked outside of MX, we e-mailed and AIMed and some of us actually called people/met others if we were in the same area. Lots of the "old schoolers" use to do tape trades and such. I know that still happens to a certain extent, but the forum just doesn't have the same feel to it anymore.

That's kinda how the internet is though. It's like that everywhere; I think the internet has just become so saturated that it's hard to have actual constructive conversations/disagreements, especially on a site as heavily visited as this. I dunno.

Yeah it is. I kind of equate it to a small town music store that you go to all the time, hang out, talk to the guys that run it and it's just a generally cool place. Then all of a sudden they get bought out by some huge chain store and it's just not the same.

Both movies were really good, but I agree that The Illusionist trumps The Prestige by just a bit. I'm curious what Steerpike's opinion of the two movies are. I think I liked the one more than the other because it seemed a lot more arty, while the other one was just straight-up 1-upping after 1-upping, which was cool, but I enjoyed it slightly less than the entire Illusionist package.

EDIT: apparently if you watch the movies over, you see/understand the things you missed out on the first time, but then again, that seems to be the case for a lot of movies.

Best book I've read in this year is Headgames by Nick Earls. Very witty, well-written and rather insightful novel. It's sort of a series of short stories surrounding this bloke's journey through med school interspersed with one-shot short stories that range from slightly quirky to fairly outrageous. Top stuff.

And Orestes, The Simpsons has to be the biggest cartoon franchise in years, I can't believe you haven't had more opportunities to get into them.

Perfume? It's about a low-born French guy who has an exceptional sense of smell, but is born without a scent of his own (which disturbs other people), amongst many other problems. He becomes obsessed with smell, as you probably would in that situation, and spends most of his time chasing the perfect scent, which mostly involves killing women in an attempt to 'capture' theirs.

The book, at least.

No, it's a technical high school, hence, you get out of 12th grade and can go right out on to the job without a degree.

But that would more or less lead to apprenticeships rather than university anyways.

We have technical schools here but, like, okay. You can't go to Central Tech here and study robotics and graduate to work for a huge robotics firm.

Technical schools might give you the tools, but unfortunately companies like to see 4 year degrees.

Something.

Nah, nah. I don't have to. I get college level training through my 4 years of high school next year. At age 18 when I get out of high school, I will be able to have my own company.

I have to join in with Tyler on the doubt train. Even if you go to technical school, it won't be the same as doing tertiary study at a technical college or University or community college or what have you. Sure, you might be able to graduate and get the job you want, but you won't get the level of training, or the degree, that you would through attending a tertiary institution.

You can work in the electrical field here, do your for years, get time on the job through co-op, then work for the company you co-op'd with full time straight out of high school.

Riva

Yeah, I'm not doubting that. Australia has a similar set-up, it's called school-based apprenticeships. The fact is, you're not going to be graduating from High School as a fourth-year apprentice. Maybe a second-year if you're lucky.

Hey man, I'm only saying what I know. A friend of mine did it and was telling me about. Now he owns his own business and is making upwards of $100 an hour.

Yay for me, 3000.

I doubt he went straight from high school into his own business. I think you might be exaggerating just a tad, and if you're not, then it's better we dashed your expectations now rather than 3 years down the track.

To paraphrase Auric von Goldfinger:

You know nothing, Mr. Hbp.

No, he went straight from high school to his co-op'd business, then much later, has his own business. Come now, sir. You must keep up, now!

Do you get to do co-op and get paid instead of going to school for two weeks?

No, it's not legal for them to pay you because it's a course requirement.

It's still the same exact thing. You take co-op and you work somewhere in your field of choice.

Dude, stop trying to impress us. You're not waltzing down the magic path to fame, fortune and glory. You're working towards the exact same thing countless other tradesmen are working towards. Just like I'm working towards the exact same thing countless other Uni students are working towards. There is no easy path, and the sooner you realise this, the easier it'll be on you.

Unless you give it all up and go work at a mine here in Australia as a dump truck driver for $100,000 a year.

That's like when young dudes go to work at the oil rigs in Alberta. Amazing money but lots of injuries, and it's hard work.

Yeah, you can, for minimal training, be a dump truck driver and earn more than a graduate with a BSc. :p

It's a 12 hour, mind numbingly boring day though.

Hi everyone, /waves
Had a cool day. Spent most of it at a friend's house playing Guitar Hero II and jamming our own Punk Rock-ish version of Jerry C's Canon Rock, me on lead. w00t. Classical pieces are such fun to screw around with on an electric guitar, lemme tell ya.

well non-conformity can be looked at in two ways.

1) literally, it's virtually impossible to be a non-conformist.
2) non-conformity can mean rejecting the broadest of societal norms and creating a modified belief system.

granted, when we're talking about anarchy, that's a different thing, but for the most part, i think non-conformity is a misunderstood concept. then again, there are a lot of people who try to buck these norms and attach to something else for the sake of appearing different, but there are also a lot of quieter people who are actually true to themselves and don't give a **** about advertising their difference.
