You're Living All Over Me was awesome, and someday I'll get Bug, but what other albums by them are of high quality?

And you can talk about other Jr. stuff here too.

Where You Been? is my personal favorite just for the song "Start Choppin". You should get the new album. Its really good.

Without a Sound is good.

sonictheplumber

What's their worst album? I'm sure a band like that can't make a god-awful album, but still, what's their worst?

mozartv

Without a sound is a good album, but i would consider it their worst album.

Thanks

Their stuff after Barlow left isn't very good. Beyond is really really great. The s/t is also good.

Beyond is their 3rd best after Bug and You're Living All Over Me in my oppinion.

I like some of the laid back stuff they did later, but as albums they're never that cohesive. Seeing them at Reading Festival in a couple of weeks and it should be great - it will be my 3rd time seeing them.

The Jungler
08-09-2007, 03:18 PM
I don't care for the stuff post-Barlow much, but the first three albums are all good. After you get Bug go with the self-titled. Then Beyond I guess.

Bug = YLAOM > Beyond > Green Mind > Where You Been > Hand it Over > Dinosaur = Without a Sound

Bug and You're Living All Over Me are the only Dinosaur Jr. albums worth listening to.

Have you heard Beyond, though, Zebra? It's basically on par with those two.

Zebra

I'm partial to Beyond. It has some solid numbers like "Crumble" and "Pick Me Up" but I find that it's just to inconsistent.

the only song i've heard from their first album is "Repulsion" but its so good that i find it hard to believe that the album as a whole is bad.

YLOAM is probably their best album, but their best song is the post-Barlow "Thumb"

I just listened to a little bit of You're Living All Over Me (I think), and Mascis' voice reminded me a lot of Stephen Malkmus. They don't really sound the same, but they use a similar inflection or style or something.

A friend burned me a copy of Beyond and it's pretty much all I've been listening to for the past week. The guitar work is amazing. Have you guys heard J Mascis' stuff on the new Lemonheads album? It rules.

Masics' voice, like I said, reminds me of Malkmus, but also a little Neil Young, a little Jay Farrar, and even a little Kurt Cobain.

"Almost Ready" is the perfect way to welcome the band back, but the chord progression is so simple it's almost annoying (and unlike earlier releases, its simplicity isnt obscured by nearly enough noise).

but "Crumble" is my favorite song on the album. best combination of the old band and something new, as far as i'm concerned

Boilermaker

I gotta say I listened to Bug last night and it's not as good as I remember it being, but it's still alright. Freak Scene is still one of their best songs.

no the best non-barlow album is Green Mind, if only because "Thumb" is the best Dino Jr. song ever, and "The Wagon" aint too bad either

CatfishJones
09-08-2007, 07:55 PM
idk, i've never listened to green mind. probably should get around to that.

JohnXDoe
09-08-2007, 09:27 PM
it shocks me that more people haven't heard Green Mind. that is one of my favorite albums from the '90s. it really is outstanding. who cares if it was a major label debut, etc....i'm pretty sure this is J. as a one man band, basically, playing all guitar parts, bass, and drums.

the combo of Blowing It and I Live For That Look hooks me in every time. the way it transforms is seamless. honestly, i would go so far as to say this is their most consistent and possibly best recording, all due respect to Barlow. also for those unfamiliar the album ends with the title track, as some editions include a few bonus tracks. the album isn't perfect and of course expectations are raised when such praise is heaped on a recording, but the first four and last four songs on this album are pretty much spot on.

EDIT: Where You Been can't touch Green Mind. Not even close imho

CatfishJones
09-08-2007, 09:31 PM

i think you would like it in total. i like it because its a true album of songs. its meant to be listened to in total. and although i always skip track 5 and possibly track 6 (the two middle tracks imo break up the goodness) the rest is really like rock n roll heaven to me. but thats just me :-/

should be EVERYBODY
