LAY DOWN YOUR SOULS!

Venom.

Some say they're old black metal, some say they aren't. I don't give a ****, because what they are is great music. This is thread, while will probably be short lived is for dedicating posts in Venom appreciation. Hbp is not allowed to post in here, until his testicles finally drop and starts liking Venom.

Start discussing, I've been diggin' Welcome to Hell a lot more than usual as of lately.

Venom is fun stuff, I'd say you could call them black metal because they invented the phrase and even though they are nowhere near as raw as some newer bands. Black Metal ftw.

Hell yeah. Venom is always great, and certainly a classic. I think I like Black Metal a little more than Welcome to Hell. Maybe that's because I've listened to it more so I'm a little more familiar with it, so to speak. They're both great albums.

the thing about calling Venom black metal just for coining the phrase though, if we used that logic, we might as well call Steppenwolf "heavy metal" for coining the phrase, when I don't think they are, in fact heavy metal. Anyways, I don't really want to see this turn into some huge debate, that's just my two cents and I'm not going to get pissed off and bitchy if people come in here making claims opposite of my own... for now at least.

Black Metal for a long while was my favorite release by them, but about a week ago, I decided to listen to In League With Satan, then decided to listen to the whole album which is why I'm currently loving it.

I've not got around to getting their Blood Lust ep, I should though because In Nomine Satanas owns.

I've always called them Speed or Trad Metal. I'm not denying their influence on the genre, but musically I think it's quite obvious that's what they are.

it's funny that you would happen to make this thread today because i've been listening to Black Metal a ton today

I was debating on making a venom thread a few days ago and ended up not doing it, then saw the discussion in the BM thread so I decided to...

the thing about calling Venom black metal just for coining the phrase though

The thing about calling anything black metal though, is that it was never supposed to be "one specific sound"; I don't see too many similarities for music that is all enveloped in one genre between Mayhem's Deathcrush, Burzum's Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Beherit's Drawing Down the Moon.

It pisses me off that these days, black metal = "typically characterized by the use of heavily-distorted guitars, harsh high-pitched shrieking vocals, fast-paced rhythms and melodies, and unconventional song structures" - according to wikipedia

Anyway, I agree that we shouldn't start yet another long-winded arguement that goes nowhere.

Venom is the oldest of old-school black metal, and essential listening.

The thing about calling anything black metal though, is that it was never supposed to be "one specific sound";
Precisely. I am disgusted by kiddies who think black metal is encapsulated by Norway in 1992.

oh and:
the thing about calling Venom black metal just for coining the phrase though
Well, the thing about calling Venom black metal just for coining the phrase IS THAT THEY DIDN'T COIN THE PHRASE.

lol Holy Moses.

Yeah, Venom are pretty good. Some black metal sounds more like the intro of 'Black Metal' ;D

I call Venom Thrash Metal even though people always say their BM. Okay, so they were the first group to use the term but that was back in the early 80s. Maybe they were considered BM back than and something a little less extreme now.

It's the same concept with the "Classic Rock" genre. The bands we would call CM, my mom/dad would call them metal.

You bring up a solid point. And I have to agree with you on that. I never even bothered to take that into consideration.

At War With Satan is great. I don't know why everyone overlooks it. It has Rip Ride on it for and the title track is epic.
