Take a look at the What I've Been Digging Lately thread, check out some of the stuff mentioned there. This thread will probably just get spammed.

Your clearly being elitist for the sake of it.
Try bloc party's first album mate and try modest mouse's latest album. Then let your taste in music to spand :)

I can see what you mean. However i like the new modest mouse album and I doubt that most people would get into lonesome crowded west before we were dead. Takes time to get into stuff like that
no it doesn't. i liked lonesome crowded west on first listen.

Well thats good for you but not everyone is like that. When i was new to indie i listened to oasis, bloc party, razorlight and bigger bands like that. True these bands arnt the greatest but were trying to introduce him to indie. Underground bands usually dont do that.
maybe im wrong.
Check out Super furry animals. Start with radiator. Ace album :)
oasis, bloc party, and razorlight aren't indie.
indie isn't a sound.

The forum is named alternative and indie...so therefore people should be able to recommend anything they deem, and others agree to be, alternative and/or independant?

but this thread is about independent music. and independent music exists only on independent labels unless the artist releases the music themselves.

Architecture in Helsinki- In Case We Die
Sonic Youth- Goo and Daydream Nation
Mission of Burma- ONoffON
My Bloody Valentine- Loveless
Sparta- Porcelain (if you wanna lump that in with indie)
Interpol- Turn On The Bright Lights

you're doing it wrong.
You're a moron, there's tons of stuff on independant labels that would be exactly NOT what the guy is looking for.....what kind of person asks for music based on the type of label that it's on?

tbh john sellers' definition of indie is the one i adhere to and that is "music that feels independent" even if it's not necessarily on an indie label. of course what feels independent is subjective in a lot of ways but there really is no point in trying to argue it's not indie if it's not on an independent label because it's obviously adapted a semi-specific sound.

gentlemen this conflict could all be resolved simply with http://www.sendspace.com/file/1vx5s1
I can't believe that anyone would seriously suggest 'indie music' is still directly associated to independent labels. Whether people like it or not genre definitions change with time and Indie music is defined by it's sound these days, it's a broad sound, but it's easy enough to recognise. Besides, a great proportion of the bands people talk about in this forum are attatched to a major label in some way, given horizontal integration and how Major labels have pretty much destroyed the idea of being independent.
Anyway, I'll suggest some usual obvious ones:
Pavement - Slanted + Enchanted
Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People
The Cure - Head on the Door
The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
The Stooges - Fun House
A Dead Modernist

No this is rubbish. The idea of being of having to be on an independant label to be indie was scraped years ago. Whether you like it or not the term has changed. Completely. If you want to delve into subgenres and sub- sub genres than fair enough but lifes easier if we just call it indie. Seriously.

Okay, from seeing everything, I've noticed Neutral Milk Hotel and The Velvet Underground being consistant. Considering I already own every Radiohead album, and like Minus the Bear alot, I'm actually even more confused about what Indie is now. I was also under the assumption that Sonic Youth was Noise Rock, but apparently I was wrong about that. Bleh, whatever.
indie's not a genre, guy. so you were right in assuming sonic youth is noise rock.

Bleh, I'm totally lost. Oh well. So Indie is describing a record label? Or just some ambient term that no one can define?
Indie labels
Major labels
Learn the difference.
indie is independent music, which basically means any kind of music released on an indie label.
