Flutes/Whistles/etc

So...I got a Tin Whistle and I've been trying to learn how to play it. I've been progressing fairly decently, but one thing has been nagging at me...for certain half step intervals, the notation is to "half close" the hole. How exactly do you go about doing this and producing a decent tone?

Other than that...discuss the manliest of all instrument categories: woodwinds! :p
