I dunno, I don't really believe in 'essential' albums to own. But if somebody's interesting to Indie there are albums which I consider important.

Husker Du - Zen Arcade
The Smiths - Queen is dead
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted

Loads really, but these are particuarly relevant.
