Well listen to some more Jazz. Then youll find a good song youre willing to learn to play.
Youll also pick up on a lot of the techniques used in Jazz like ghost notes, drags, etc.

Jazz is really a style that you have to listen to extensively to pick up the styles and nuances. Arm yourself with recordings like Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Duke Ellington, etc. for Big Band, and Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Charlie Parker, etc. for combo stuff. There many more of course, these are just some that come to mind to get started with.

I really like Herbie Hancock's jazz stuff....
Cantaloupe Island is a great song.
Tony Williams played on the original plus, its quite simple playing forward...doesn't have the traditional swing feel though, instead is played with a straight feel...

Or....Take Five by The Dave Brubeck Quartet.
This one's a little harder...tis in 5/4 (hence the name) and has a drum solo section in it...
It is however, a totally kick as$ piece, performed by one of my favourite drummers; Joe Morello and contains one of the coolest grooves ever imo...

Take 5 is Brubeck's most famous tune, but probably not a great one for a beginner. Buy the CD though and listen to the other stuff too!

i love playing take 5. lately, at my drum teacher's suggestion (who is helping me get into jazz) i've been playing along to an art blakey cd i got called "the freedom rider". i like it because it's definitely jazz, but it's not super difficult technically. of course, it's super difficult to play with the same groove as art blakey.

Misterioso - Thelonious Monk.
Blakely does some good half time stuff in there too...
In Walked Bud might be a bit easier (also by Monk)

another one my drum teacher recommended that i like a lot and can play along too without a whole lot of trouble is "kind of blue" by miles davis.

Thx Guys, I'll look to them.
And like I've said, I play jazz for 2 years but only once a week (during 3 hours so I have to stay at school till 10 'o' clock)

When you say Jazz... what kind of jazz do you mean specifically?
Old style, New Orleans... big band, more modern?

With a bit of practice you'll pull off most Coltrane.

What experience do you have in Jazz? I know The "J" Bird is a pretty recognized song, you might want to look into Freddie Freeloader or So What by Miles Davis. Also check into Harry Conick Junior. For funk, maybe look into Stevie Wonder. For the rest, can't help ya much dude.
