View Full Version : Tell me how much I suck and why

This morning my singer came over and we tracked a song, mostly for the sake of getting our other bandmates to play it right. So, everyone listen and tell me what you think. Mainly, I want to know about the drum mix and what I can do to make it better(I feel like the snare dosen't always come through as it should, and the tom fills aren't as strong as they should be.) Also criticizm on composition and playing. No criticizm on singing, we knew he wouldn't be able to sing it today so we just took one take for the sake of having it to mix. I also know vocals are to far back in the mix.

What set-up are you using to record the drum kit?

The best playing you could do for that type of music.

The song itself was good, especially some of the vocal melodies, although the singer did tend to get off key a bit.

Sickness.

The only part that made me not like the song was how loose your snare is. You might like it, i dont =/.

Yeah, I might tune the snare up if we do it again, or mabye mic it differently.

We tracked each insturment seperatley, everything recorded through a firepod. For the drums I had 6 mics on my vintage ludwigs, 2 overheads, everything else closmicd, with snare mic on the reso head. (Audix Fusion and Shure mics)

EDIT: UPDATE

http://media.putfile.com/Icantstopstephensmix

I sent my singer the raw tracks yesterday and he made a new vocal track and did his own mix on the same insturmentals. Opinions on both are requested, please(I think the mix is cleaner, but mabye too bright.)

That second mix souded BEEFY with my big subwoofer...

The snare just lets it down IMO, sounds really loose.

I do think its a bit busy the song as a whole, but thats my opinion, and everyone has one.

I think its cool man

Are you talking about the tuning of the snare or the playing of it?

If it's the tuning, then I think you're insane because I cranked it for that recording, but I'll work on it some more.

And what do you mean by busy? The playing, the composition?

Thanks for the feedback, just trying to get a clearer idea of what to fix.

Try micing the batter side of the snare and tightening up the batter head as tight as it can go.

Or not.
Why would you wanna tighten it as tight as it can go? Thats pretty stupid tbh.
I cant listen because putfile isnt working for me :)

I put it on yousendit earlier too incase anyone wants to download it there.

I personally think the snare sounds fine, mabye a little low in pitch, but I don't think it sounds loose or anything like that. So, could someone give me some more specific criticizm on that in exactly how it's loose, as well as on anything else?

Are you micing the snare reso or batter?

Caleb3221

I'm micing the reso from a few inches below the drum. Not a standard way to do it but it sounded really good on another recording I did so I did it again.

To make it sound better, if you can, mic. the batter and reso.

mic batter..

if your not going to mic both sides, only mic the batter. Your snare has no definition and no cut.
It's all snare wire.

Tightening the batter head as tight (or close to it) as can go, will give that crack sound needed to cut through the mix. Tuning for studio is always different than tuning for live situations. When using one mic for studio, always mic the batter side, and not the resonant side, as all you will hear is wire buzz, and instead of that crisp crack sound you're looking for, it will sound mirky and muddled, as demonstrated in the OT clip provided.

Sometimes musicians are looking for that snare buzz to really come through on a particular mix, in that case they usually mic batter and reso.

Hope this answers your question.

Not my prefered type of music but nice playing. Drums could have been higher in the mix tbh, especially the kick.

MX was down right when I hit submit, and it was down for a few hours. I guess I hit it twice.
