I think he's a truly phenomenal drummer, especially on the early Pink Floyd stuff. Thoughts?

I'm a very big fan of Floyd but i've never really thought of him as that great.
He's very simple and restrained which is not necessarily a bad thing, but at times it can dampen the music a little bit.
Earlier stuff he was better i think but we was very frequently out of time (listen to the live album on Ummagumma and Live At Pompeii for reference), although it did seem to add to that experimental and chaotic atmosphere of the music.

Very tasty less is more style. Knows when to let the music breath and when to do a fill. You don't need to do great fills when your band is a giant acid trip unto it self. His drumming is PERFECT of the material.:chug:

i don't think he's massively skilled or anything like that, but he helped define that trippy pink floyd sound, and without him pink floyd probably would not have reached the level that they did.

I wouldnt call Mason great, but he is exactly what Pink Floyd need.
For that I geuss I would call him "Great for Pink Floyd"

Eh...he's a decent drummer in his own right. His meandering, melodic fills in "Money" are classic.

Dark side of the moon had some good drumming on it, its such a classic album though, its hard to find anything to fault with it

Yeah, he fit the music perfectly.
His book is really interesting btw. I got him to sign my copy at his book signing in Seattle. Good stuff.

He's great, and anyone who calls him simplistic has never tried to emulate his style. Play "set the controls..." like him with that feel and push/pull and .. all the dynamics and i'll buy you a beer.

I noticed that, too. My dad and I both really enjoy Pink Floyd, so we watched Live at Pompeii, and I pointed out that Nick occasionally went out of time.

They usually had enough drugs in them to kill a water buffalo..I'm impressed he could even MOVE his arms. Ummagumma was super experimental and you can hear them giving a cat a bath on Several Small Fury Creatures.....Drugs were much better back then.....

I've heard he actually would rather be a professional race car driver... he just happens to have some decent natural talent. Great feel behind his playing though, very laid back but pushing at the same time.

Hes pretty decent, nothin too fancy but he doesnt need to be.
Sometimes when im pretty tense and wound up, I go sit at my kit and just play some stuff similar to his style and its always pretty chill and calm.
