View Full Version : Good modern rock

This kid from my church keeps annoying me with his taste in music, so I'm giving him some cds. He likes modern rock like Linkin Park and Good Charlotte as well as 'classic rock' like Led Zeppelin and Guns N Roses. He remarked to me the other day about how he thinks modern rock is getting a bit too samey. So I'm giving him these so far;

Comets on Fire - Avatar
Deftones - White Pony
Dredg - Catch Without Arms

Any other suggestions?

HUM- Downward Is Heavenward is the only good modern rock album that's not "alternative" or anything.

YDload, I bet you used to be into Nirvana when you were a wee-one. If I wasn't obsessed with Nirvana when I was younger I wouldn't have started listening to the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., Fugazi, etc..

i was never into Nirvana. they were too omnipresent on radio stations and TV that it just turned me off to them. but i still looked into all those bands you mentioned, the ones that influenced Nirvana, only because they were predecessors and not because i actually liked Cobain and Co.

point is that everyone goes through a shitty music phase (most are still in it).

and Nirvana weren't terrible they were just extremely overrated.

Thanks

Maybe we should think of things this kid might like, rather than trying to turn him into a stereotypical record nerd. I mean, that's not the way to go for the average kid that wants to just rock out.

margin0walker

Ok well I'm giving him some Girls Against Boys because he plays bass and some Stooges.

Thanks for the suggestions, but honestly, a lot of them sucked. Like in light of the original post, how can you seriously recommend Neutral Milk Hotel? Oh well.

Adam CR
07-19-2007, 01:56 AM
I'd recommend Failure's 'Fantastic Planet' and Creeper Lagoon's 'Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday'.

How about like Kyuss or something? or Dinosaur Jr because he likes Classic Rock and they play guitar solos.

Not that those bands are modern, but y'know.

I wouldn't advise giving him Comets on Fire at the moment. I've tried "converting" someone before using that very album and the response was neg. The following are easy enough whilst retaining quality status.

Betchadupa - The Alphabetchadupa
Quicksand - Slip
Nada Surf - Let Go
