OK so i have this song and it goes from a E chord to a A and to a B.

BUt i dont just want to play root notes what should i do?

or what,what style of song,tempo etc etc,so we can get a better idea.

what notes you play isnt nearly as important as the rhythm you play them in. other than that it depends on the chord quality.

Passing tones aren't always your friend in a bassline. If you don't want to just play roots and you're a bassist, try just arpeggiating a couple of different ways, you can almost never fail with that.

Why don't you want to play the root?

Playing roots is not a bad thing contrary to popular belief

It's the role of the instrument in countless styles of musics

I find it helps to audioize a part in your head

That way it's done, all you have to do is figure out how to play it, which usually doesn't take long at all if you are decent with ear training/theory

That's the way I write music anyway
