Libertines/Babyshambles/Dirty Pretty Things

The only thing I regret in life (and that's saying a lot, if you've seen what I've worn/listened to/smoked/screwed) is being too up my own arse to appreciate good indie when it was in its prime.

How I could let a fantastic band like the Libertines just go right off my radar because omgz they weren't thrash (or whatever I listened to in 2003) is beyond me.

The first time I remember conciously seeing Pete Doherty and saying 'hey, that's the guy from the Libertines!!!' was Live 8. I don't remember recognising any Libertines songs on the TV/radio, not like how obviously I remember a Franz Ferdinand/Killers song etc etc. Whether or not I liked it at the time, it just ceased to exist in the void of my musical retardedness.

I didn't get any Libertines albums until late last year or early this year... Got the Babyshambles album about the same time but it didn't 'click' until last week when I forced myself to listen to it a lot.

Bizarre.

What are Dirty Pretty Things like?

I dunno, I just got it, giving it a first listen now. Up The Bracket and Boys in the Band are great.

From other material What A Waster, Don't Look Back Into The Sun, Can't Stand Me Now, Last Post on the Bugle etc was great.

meh, the pixies are average. the libs on the other hand are class. Up the Bracket is the better of the two albums in general. DPT are a good band )not great) they are more heavy than the libertines but still pretty good. the key tracks are probably: bang bang you're dead, deadwood, gentry cove and doctors and dealers

The Pixies are really terrible. All but two songs (Monkeys Gone To Heaven and Debaser) are unlistenable. Those two are just about ok if you're reallllly stoned.

I got A*, 2A, 5B, 3C at GCSE, everyone at my school said that was awful (which it was tbh, GCSEs were a doss, and I went to a grammar school). Now all my friends say that's amazing. I know so many people with like 3 Ds at GCSE.

Either way I royally ****ed it up at AS Level - C, D, U, X. Hell yeah.

I was meant to see some of his bands at festivals at some point, but they cancelled every time, probably because Doherty was stoned off his ***. They're okay, I guess. But there's no need to bash the pixies, since they are God.

I don't like to associate myself with rocknrollstar5 if I can help it, or anybody who dislikes the Pixies, but I like the Libertines first album. A lot.

It's a shame that the self titled and DPT is complete garbage, but Up The Bracket has great songs and great lyrics. Pete's talented with words, but he can;t always convert that into songs.

The Libertines hold some importance in the UK because they brought British indie rock music back to the fans. Just after Oasis and affiliated brit pop bands had blown it up to the extent of playing stadiums, the Libertines were a popular band who brought it back down to playing clubs, pubs and even their own house! Like the music or not, they are partly responsible to re-popularising guitar-based music over here.

Ironically Babyshambles are now playing Arenas and the whole cycle is just repeating itself over again. *sigh*

The press that Pete Doherty gets is so annoying, but when you look at a lot of big press draws in Britain, then it's not that surprising.

That said - although I don't listen to them, I'd say The Libertines are a decent band. They made lots of trash, but some good, and I really love one of their songs. The way I see it though, they're sometimes fun, but ALWAYS unremarkable.

The Libertines were terribly important when they came out. They had some great singles but the albums are just unlistenable. Like The White Stripes, there just came a point where I physically became unable to listen to or hear about Pete Doherty.
