i was thinking of this, it's got a bunch of nice options but i've heard the simple solid state pedals are really sick too...

I've yet to hear a compressor in a pedal format that's really impressed me. That's not to say that there's something wrong with the format though.
My all-time favorite compressor is the Rane DC-24. Rackmountable in a 1U space, auto attack/release settings, built-in active crossover, mono/stereo/split-combine operation, compressor, expander, limiter... All compressors should be this cool... And Rane should NOT have discontinued it. You can find them used for an absolute steal.

what's the deal with boss cs-2 and cs-3? is the cs-3 just a newer model?
http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/CS-3/index.html
i've got a cs-3 and it works fine, can't say how good it is cause it's basically the only compressor i've tried.

Are there different compressor pedals for bass and guitar or are they pretty much universal?

A compressor is a compressor. All a compressor does (ideally) is reduce the dynamic of the waveform. That being said there are plenty with a built in color that might be more suitable to a guitar, or a conversely to a bass.

The BBE Opto stomp (I think thats the name) is supposed to be a pretty decent pedal compressor.

If you can, find a Trace Elliot SMX Dual band compressor. Much like the Rane, except in a pedal format. You can usually find them on ebay and pawn stores. They are very transparent and add that punch in the balls tone, nice and tight, they also feature a crossover and run on 18 volts which can be a blessing in terms of head room but a problem with finding a suitable power supply.

I like the MXR Compressor (I've only used the black one, although the red one is cheaper and I don't know the differences between the two).

Demeter Compulator. Best stomp compressor hands down. Its also has a steep price $200.

Boss Cs-2
This, the Cs-2 is the best compressor i have used, pity they discontinued it, i dont like the new version anywhere near as much.

If it says Demeter on it... its amazing. I wrote Demeter on the grill of my cheap 2x12 cabinet and it sounded ten times better  My lust for a Demeter VTBP-201S knows no bounds...

Hey man, is there any way to know if your amp can handle a capacitative load without just testing it and seeing if it melts
/hijack (sorry)
EDIT: I'm gona test out a Toadworks Mr Squishy, I'll let you know how it sounds :thumb:

That's beyond my realm... What type of capictant are you going to use to load down your amp... and on top of that... why are you doing this? :amaze:

Realistically for stomp box the Aphex Punch Factory is probably your best bet. Even Timmy C has one.

I was thinkin about building another cab but using a capacitative piezo horn as it wouldn't alter the impedance and wouldn't need a crossover...

If all you're doing is adding a piezo you have nothing to worry about. I'm probably going to add several in a vertical line to my 2x12 to smooth out high end response and just mediate the level via an L-Pad on the rear. :thumb:

Cool, I think the impedance of the piezo horn ranges from 50-250Ohm will that not affect the overall impedance of the cab?

I am actually considering a Boss Compressor pedal. Has anyone tried it? How is it?

The CS-3 is meant to be pretty mediocre. Theres some mods for it that can be done, which is meant to drastically improve it though.

piezos won't... they can depending on how you wire the cabinet, but if you just do a conventional parallel wiring the effect will be so minor that you won't be able to tell. It'd be like the difference between 4 ohms, 3.86 ohms and 4.03 ohms. You'd need a meter to see/hear the difference.

I hear its really noisy. If you want a cheaper pedal get the Aphex Punch Factory. You can pick them up used for like $60. They are very transparent and you will see a lot of pro's using the pedal.

I have the Boss limiter - LMB3, and never had noise issues with it. I don't really like it though.
