Educational Simulations has finally released a new version of Real Lives (last one was 2004). Details are still somewhat vague about the alterations, but they've supposedly spent quite a bit of time fixing the notorious glitches from the last game, you can now move to other countries, the statistics have been updated, careers have been added, and there are now more life choices you'll have to make decisions on.
For those of you who haven't played the games before, it's a simple life "simulation". You're born in a randomly selected country with a randomized name, family, and talents/attributes. Every time you click the Age a Year button, a number of events will happen to you and your family, and you'll be faced with decisions that have the potential to permanently change your "life".
Since all of the game's randomizations are based on real life statistics, chances are you'll be born in China or some horrid third world hellhole. The sheer melodrama that often results from this makes up about 70% of what makes Real Lives so entertaining. It's really more of a misery simulator than anything else.

this is brutal.
I'm a 14 year old Vietnamese child with no schooling (despite my really high intelligence :/) and my parents kicked me out for choosing to see my g/f.
I was a Chinese dude and I think I spent a total of about 11 years in prison there, then I moved to Sweden, then to the U.S., got married, then died in Italy incredibly wealthy, yet still unhappy.

w00t second time through I was a poor South African girl, of only average intelligence, who stayed single most of her life (very low attractiveness rating), made close to $1 million through investment, then moved to Switzerland at the age of 82 and lived to be 94. Not bad for a cabinet maker :p

I finally got a person in the USA (Macon Georgia), but she was pretty dumb (intelligence 11). It was mad depressing, every relationship her and her 5 siblings got in failed, and then all but one of them got involved with drugs or became alcoholics. I got her into college a little bit later in life and she got a business degree which didnt do much for her, and then she moved to california.

My ridiculously good looking brazilian got into the US illegally and then got rich and moved to germany, I dont know where to go next. I dont know how he gets a job anywhere, he did 2 seperate 3 year stints in prison.
I tried to get this dude from El Salvador into the US, but because I decided to get hooked on drugs and move out of my house when I was 14 I had to sneak through all of central america. I moved into a town right on the US border, and then died.

On one life I was a nursing aid and had an option to do something illegally and made 100k off it without getting caught.
Another life a friend asked for an investment in an illegal scheme that he said was low risk. I lost all my my 500k+ investment became an alcoholic and died.

Full version you can create your own characters, with specs that you decide etc. There are probably a few more nice features available, but the free version is more than adequate.
Becoming a doctor is the way to go. I was born in Russia, with about 70 intelligence and 80 appearance ;). Went to college for Pre-Law, struggled, got expelled. Then reapplied and passed for Pre-Med. Went to Graduate School and passed that for Medicine. Then got married a few times, had a few children, kept getting raises and lived life in luxury.
I am now 71 years old, raking in 140,000 rubles a month (over $6,000 American) and have had top consumer items, shelter and diet for the last 30 years. I also have 8,000,000 rubles saved up. I haven't needed to invest in anything either. My income vs. nation and the world is off the chart. Living the good life :).
Edit: Finally at 80 years old, my last daughter at home moved out (she was 47 years old :/). Now my income is 150,000 rubles and top consumer items, shelter and diet costs me 90,000 rubles a month. Although I just got robbed 3,000,000 rubles.
At 81, I was told that I am too old to work as a doctor, so I have retired and will try and live out 10 more years without a job.
Edit edit: Now I died at 89 years of age, with 4,000,000 rubles of money left. What a life!

that's one of my complaints: children tend to stay at home (and not work) wayyyy too long. Also, even in first world countries, secret police arrest you :p
