View Full Version : Many punks in your area?
blockhead

I live in a small southern town in South Carolina and there are very few people that are into punk music. I don't have a mohawk or anything, but I consider myself a punk. I listen to Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Clash and many other punk bands all the time, am a libertarian and don't really follow social regulations too often. Are there many punks in your area?

I'd put down everything and move to a major city. Major cities rule when it comes to punk because there's so much to get involved in. Smaller towns don't really need punk movements because the effects on a small town are near insignificant and will just result in everyone in town knowing you're a delinquent, which is still ok in my book.

Theres not a lot in my immediate area/neighborhood. Theres some, but they're kind of stupid. But there's a lot around ceder avenue when there's a punk show at the triplerock in Minneapolis.

most people that call themselves punk in ohio aren't punk at all. they listen to greenday and taking back sunday. they're the type of kids that say "punk rock" to everything. i guess that phrase replaced "cool".
they're the "music punks" not the one that live "punk". they constantly base their lives on SLC punks. i'm quite tired of it.
the "punks" here are emos in denial really. i don't consider myself punk. if i do, it'll be the day i'll shoot myself between the eyes.
wow that was a really "punk rock" thing to say.:smash:

I also have the problem with the only punks around here being the "dumb punks" someone else spoke of who are really just juvenile delinquents. Basically I think a punk is someone who thinks for himself/herself.

you're lucky man, isn't the punk scene in L.A huge?
i don't know any punks. i live on a farm surrounded by a bunch of small redneck towns.
everyone just assumes i'm emo, because emo has gotten really popular over the last 2 years and they don't know any different.
I live in London, we have masses of people who like any given subgenre of punk.
its sort of ridiculous how popular punk is here (not with school kids or anything like that)
we have lots of crappy scenekids but no punks.
Theres this town like an hour away from my town were there are lots of punks. ITs funny, they have nazis, punks, AFAs and all sorts of subcultures you can think of.
Wew have like, jocks and wannabe-hiphopkids
Johnny Quest.

Not really. It's a small town with no gig venues so what do you expect. There is the occasional street punk and my barber is really into thrashy punk off that label 625, but other than that no.

I forgot to mention that within the last year there has suddenly been a bunch of skinheads around. I'm friends with a couple of them. It seems like they spend their entire life going "no really, I swear, I'm not a nazi! I'm not racist! our lead singer is asian!" etc. It just doesn't seem like it's worth it for an image.

A lot of them here say they are "individualist" or "traditionalist" or nationalist instead of racist. They talk a lot about "honor" and look down on anyone who aren't just like them or in their scene as complete scum. So I don't know if they're racist (lots say they are but I don't explicitly believe it), but regardless they're huge assholes.
Crusties are everywhere in minneapolis. In the summer drunken traveling oggles swarm the place. I work at this community cafe with a big green space and I feel like we're constantly 86ing drunk crusties. I like a lot of crusties, but some are idiots.
A lot of people (me included) have cast aside the "punk" label for more of a larger "diy" scene, which includes punks and art kids and activists and faggots and whoever else. We have similar values but are otherwise rather varied.
I know lots of anti-racist skins wtf

3/4 of you mallcore f'aggots give your ...And Out Come The Wolves album a courtesy listen nightly. How could you homos have the balls to critique the people in your town for not being 'punk' enough?
I don't think you should assume anyone is a "mallcore faggot" if you don't know them.
I don't even dress punk besides a few band T-shrits, and I actually listen to a good many punk bands, so I would consider myself about the farthest thing away from "mallcore."

I was looking at the wikipedia entry for the different subcultures of punk and the one I fit into most is hardcore punk, but I don't even fit into that one perfectly. I think that's a good thing. To me, punk just means being yourself, expressing your views, resisting (to varying degrees) authority and listening to punk music.

i don't think he was necessarily looking for where he fit. why do you have to be such a d'ick about EVERYTHING? like seriously, the only people who can bother to concern themselves with 'mallcore fa,ggots' and shooting down others for not being 'punk enough' are the ones who don't have anything better to stand for or talk about and so aren't really all that 'punk' to begin with. sorry, drunk. but damn, his whole point was he didn't really fit into anything and was just being himself, so chill.

There is a small group of people where I live that like punk music, although they donīt dress or glorify the fact in any way except the occasional NOFX or Dead Kennedys t'shirt. Iīm pretty good friends with most of them, because they are all cool people. I really canīt stand the whole "punk fashion" garbage, and neither can they. Like, when you go to London and see all those guys on the streets in Camden with the mohawks, leather, boots and all - thatīs just as bad as the whole "emo kid" thing.
But if theyīre happy with it, good for them.

Surely being "punk" is like 33% image, 33% what you listen to, and the rest is attitudes. Someone who listens to a lot of punk music isn't anymore a punk than someone who only dresses like one and listens to no punk music.
Anyway, didn't the punk scene basically die 20 years ago? And since then everyones just argued about who's a real punk or not.
