This Verve have had a hard time staying together, but when they stuck it out in the past they've made some of my favorite music. Ten years after "Bittersweet Symphony" hit the airwaves, they're back with a new album out in the fall. I just hope they last long enough to tour the states while at the same time not tarnish their great reputation. With genuis guitarist Nick McCabe on board, that shouldn't be a problem.

Differant band there Ian.

The Verve's early material was suprisingly badarse. They occasionally touched on some sort of Funkadelic/Stooges field. Was good.

wow...For a forum that raves over Radiohead its very hostile to The Verve around here.

I think I may need to throw some Verve tracks on that mailing list. I have a feeling everyone has this image of them from Urban Hymns as a ballad heavy band that uses too much strings. But every album before that was really trippy rock with the occasional semi-ambient slow jams. Even their b-sides from Urban Hymns had a experimental jam feel to it reminiscent of late Blur or Radiohead. I think given a shot, a lot of you guys would change your tune about them.

Richard Ashcroft is a nit wit.

Who actually gives a **** about Verve? Last I heard they were some lame shoegazer/alternative band from the 90's.

Don't forget The Drugs Don't Work, another great single off of Urban Hymms

It was the orchestra recording from The Last Time by the Rolling Stones that was used as the basis for the song BitterSweet Symphony , wouldn't call that ripping, more like sampling, besides The Verve came up with everything else for that song anyways.

Me, so go fist yourself.

I'll probably go and see them live if I can get hold of a ticket. Richard Ashcroft is one of the greatest songwriters of the 90's. Ouch I said it...

For the most part I wouldn't say Radiohead and The Verve sound the same, but if you look at certain songs they do come close. For example, "Fake Plastic Trees" isn't too far from "The Drugs Don't Work".

On the more experimental side, Verve songs like "Stamped" are similar to Radiohead's "Meeting in the Aisle" in that they are both weird jam-type songs.

you are stupid.

Richard Ashcroft isn't any thing more then a mediocre '90s british band that had one or two minor hits that were very forgettable.

Okay, I finally sent everything Verve I own to that guy who does the mailing list. All their albums, their original Verve EP, and a compilation called Urban Legends which has all their b-sides and rare tracks. For all of you who hate this band because you've only heard a handful of tracks from Urban Hymns, challenge yourselves and give their earlier work a listen, especially since you're getting it for free. I you still hate them after you've heard it, that's okay, but you shouldn't slam a band if you've haven't heard the majority of what they have to offer.
