I don't know where to put this, but whenever I listen to an electronica album, or any related genre, or when see them live, I can't help but wonder how they make their music. I only play bass and am not familiar with electronica at all, so I was hoping someone could enlighten me as to what goes into making that type of music. Please excuse my ignorance.

are there any specific programs that they use. It seems like every artist I see live uses a Mac Laptop.

um
i hear Logic is a good program. to start out you coould try messing around with garageband but i find it kind of limiting. also a lot of synths are used and imho a lot of the equipment is expensive so its kind of hard to get into making electronic music

Why is the mac so popular among these artists? Once again, please excuse my ignorance.
Computers sucks when it comes to making electronic music.
Buy an armada of oldschool analog synths instead, maybe some old drum machine and some old sampling computer (they are expensive as hell though).

Macs have better software and stuff.
I've never seen an electronic act live. I've always wondered how much performance is involved.

no worries. this may turn into a mac vs pc debate, but at the end of the day people just use what they feel more comfortable with. pro tools works just as fine on my pc as it does on a mac. i think they guy in the battles vid has a mac.

It doesn't really matter.
Some people assume just because it's a mac, it's better for music which is totally false. It's just different. Neither is better than the other, it just depends mostly on the guts of the individual computers.

Why is the mac so popular among these artists?
macs are really user friendly and easy to use and a lot of thesse programs are made specifically for the mac before they get ported to windows
also if you are serioulsy looking into buying osme synths id suggeset looking on ebay and trying to get some used synths because, as has been said before, they can be expensive

What about sound modules? Are they used a lot in electronic music? Is an analog synth a synth without MIDI?

Synthesizers produce tones electronically, and these sounds can be shaped using various methods by the user.
Samplers take recorded audio and transpose it across the keyboard (sometimes) and allow a person to trigger these audio clips in rhythm and harmony using a keyboard or a drumpad, or other MIDI device.
A drum machine is either an electronic synthesizer (whose own sound producing architecture creates "drum" sounds) or a sampler (loaded with samples of real drums recored) that often has a simple sequencer loaded on to it, allowing users to create simple patterns and chains of patterns that emulate to varying degrees of accuracy the sound of a drummer.
MIDI (musical instrument digital interface) is the universal language, developed in the mid-1980s that allows electronic devices to transmit messages to one another such as note information, pitch-bend information, and others. Computers are often controlled using MIDI, allowing one to turn their computer into a very powerful synthesizer or sampler, which they can play with an external MIDI-enabled keyboard. This is also very common because the user is able to record MIDI tracks directly onto their computer sequencer. The computer becoms both the instrument and the recording medium.
A sequencer is an electronic device or piece of software that allows its user to compose strings of samples, audio, or MIDI notes in multiple tracks, to create a "recording" that is synchronized with a clock and that is not necessarily created using microphones and a live band.
These are the main devices that set electronic music production apart from other forms of music. However, all common practices of other forms are available to the electronic music composer, such as live-band recording, the use of a typical mixing-console and recording interface, etc.
