This guy is a great actor. One of the greatest.
For about twenty-five years, he's been putting in amazing performances, usually as borderline pyschotics.
JFK, True Romance, Sid & Nancy, Batman Begins....all great performances. And my personal favorite film of his, The Professional, where he does a pretty much perfect performance of an out of control DEA agent.
I read on imdb that he's never been nominated for an oscar. Maybe some of the films he does aren't oscar material, but he's definitely talented enough to earn one some day.
Discuss your thoughts on Mr. Gary Oldman.

I'm going to sound like a fanboy, but the scene near the beginning where he takes out the family still affects me everytime. The thing is, anyone can play a bad guy, but to play someone like Norman Stansfield, someone totally without remorse or sympathy, and not come across as campy or cartoonish, takes serious acting chops.

Yeah, too bad he is thinking about quitting acting.

Gary is a pure and solid great actor. Who remembers him in Dracula? Amazing performance, what a shame he hasen't ever even been nominated.
I may sound liek a noob, but The professional has been on my list of movies to see for like 4 years now, I need to get around to seeing it.

All three could be considered overrated.
I have a friend who really hates Kevin Spacey and thinks he is a bad actor. I can't understand why.

I thought Oldman wasn't that great in Bram Stoker's Dracula. He came off a little arrogant and the way he 'threatens' to quit doesn't help either. He is good but not great.

outstanding actor
has anyone seeing the under appreciated State Of Grace? Oldman, Sean Penn, Ed Harris, Robin Wright Penn, John Turturro, John C. Reilly. very good film about an undercover cop in too deep with the irish mob back in his old haunts. recommended with more info:

He's brilliant, at least when playing bad guys. I'm not sure I can think of a film i've seen where's he's playing a good guy actually.
Leon's probably my favourite of his, he's such a bastard.
EVERYONE!

Come on, man.
Spacey is brilliant.
Some of the roles he picks might not be the same, but he always does them well.
EDIT: Okay. All this talk of The Professional has convinced me to Netflix it and set it to number one.

I've heard that in the European version it goes farther into the supposed physical relationship between Mathilda and Leon. I don't think I would need to see that :-/

^ i thought it was an interesting aspect of the film. the viewer is shown / suggested an attraction that is not exactly friends, caretaker, or father / daughter at some points. almost flirty, and i have read some lite comparisons to Kubrick's Lolita in regard to the relationship. although not near the same subject or film.
be that as it may i think the american version handles the relationship tastefully and like you, the other part (whatever it is) really need not be part of it to make it a good film.
and all Oldman fans do check out State Of grace. Sean Penn is excellent, too.
