View Full Version : When People Ask You What Kind Of Music You Listen To...
La Revolucion

What do you say?
I usually just go with "a bit of everything," but I feel really dumb saying it because that's what everyone says.
It depends who's asking, but I really hate being asked that.
If it's somebody who doesn't know music, then I'll panic for a bit and then say "errr loads of wierd stuff really, not too much off the radio"
If it's somebody who knows music then I'll panic for a bit, then mention a few bands, usually "errr, loads of different stuff, At the Drive-In, The Cure...hip hop, electro blaaaaa"

yeah when people say they listen to "everything" it means they listen to pop rock AND pop rap and that they even enjoy wal-mart country. eclectic.
i usually just say "i listen to a lot of stuff" and that if i like it i'll listen to it, but that a lot of the bands i listen to would be considered indie.
I wish I could get out a response like that.

So I usually say 'punk' since most of the stuff I listen to is in some way or another derived from punk. Except then they might think I listen to Anti'flag or some ****, but its better than the 'everything' answer.

I'll start with genres, Rock, Alternative, Jazz, then if that sparks any of their interests I just turn the question around and ask em what THEY like to listen to, which usually ends up being alot of pop crap. I'm a jazz trained saxophone player and a classically trained clarinet player. I prefer music with substance and art. I like it complicated, and I love music that has respectable musicians, and ORIGINALITY!!! Unfortunately music today is losing these qualities.

This thread reminds me why talking to some people about music can be really painful. It's supposed to be a light-hearted discussion about each other's tastes, not a vicious judgment against whoever you're speaking with. It's music, it's your interest, you should just be happy that someone's willing to listen to you talk about it.

"We wanted to give our fans exactly what they've come to expect: music so inoffensive and indistinct that it could be played virtually anywhere—a bank lobby, an SUV stuck in traffic, a party full of aging stockbrokers and their girlfriends. That's no small task. Even a lot of the most vacant and unimaginative people have some capacity to actively engage in the music they're listening to."
According to band members, hundreds of hours were spent in the studio trying to render the sound adequately benign.
"No matter how many times we recorded the new single 'Sitting Down (Hands At My Side),' there was still a certain 'oomph' coming through in the drums, a loud-ish, slightly gripping sound that we couldn't remove," drummer Paul Doucette said. "Finally, after running them through about two dozen filters, we managed to get that 'plastic spork hitting mashed potatoes' sound we were after."
There was a similar problem, band members said, with the guitar solos, some of which contained trace elements of what musicians call "passion." In addition, the interplay among bass, drums, and guitars occasionally produced uncomfortable polyrhythmic effects that provoked unintentional toe-tapping or head-bobbing in listeners. The problems were fixed through extensive re-recording.
"I'm satisfied that all the watering-down we put into this album was worth it," Thomas said. "My lyrics are super-bland, the bass might as well have been recorded on a keyboard, and just wait until you hear how dull we managed to make the guitars sound. It's amazing."
The band will introduce the album's first single next week on MTV's hugely popular, entirely insipid show Total Request Live.

I'd play everything that could never find its way on to the radio in the first place.
edit: or is that "onto"? :/

I usually say "Alternative Rock", but then everybody thinks I'm into Nu-Metal, or "Indie Rock", but nobody knows what that means. So I usually just namecheck the Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr., and Radiohead.
For some reason I always manage to give them the kind of music I listen to the least. Like, when I went up to my friend's school for the weekend, someone on his floor asked me what kind of music I listened to and I said folk even though at the time I was only listening to one thing that could ever be considered folk.

when somebody asks me what kind of music i listen to, a just say that i listen to everything, because if i gave them an answer beyond akon or nickelback, i would just get blank stares. thats what life is like when you live in the back country of north carolina though. :upset:
If I were to ask you what you listen to and you said "everything," I'd beat you up.

I hate it when people say that.

i understand. the only reason i say it though is because otherwise i would have to spend my time trying to explain to some douchebag who radiohead is. thats right, radiohead. most people around this area have no idea who they are. tell me that isnt bad.
No, that's good. I don't like Radiohead.

yeah, but people here have never heard of them. like or dislike, people should at least know who they are. the problem is they're too busy listening to their nickelback cd they burnt using limewire.

Kazaa, you mean.
oh yes, kazaa. yeah so basically i live in a place where you either listen to country, rap, or nickelback/hinder. also, the kids who want to be different listen to "hxc". the only scene even close to me puts out bands like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOIxt5RggV4
