Two days is too long of a wait :( At the same time, i'm so happy that this movie is almost here. The first time I heard about it and saw the trailer I was so excited it wasn't even funny. This movie is going to rule harder than anything thus far in 2007 I bet.
So yeah, discuss this movie/old school stuff/games/etc

The cartoon is beyond amazing, my favorite episode was where Starscream gets exiled to Guadalcanal and finds some old WW2 wrecks. He then sneaks onto the Decepticons planet [cant remember the name] and steals the personality components from some prison and puts them in the wrecks to make his own army.
It ends with the constructobots combining to form Devastator, and Starscreams dudes [the Combaticons] combining to form Bruticus, then them two slug it out.

The cartoon is so comicly bad if you go back and watch it now. Half of the plots make no sense, they gain and lose powers on a whim and invent new characters and and timelines in the same way.
In the second episode, Prime and Megatron grow medieval energy weapons out of their hands to fight (Prime with an ax, Megatron with a ball and chain).
I'm looking forward to the movie.

I thought the guy actor was the kid from malcom in the middle (reese) but then when i saw close ups i realized it was that unfunny guy from disney series's growing up.
Anyways, I hope that doesn't put a damper on anything as the movie looks pretty peeemp

I saw it friday and it was pretty average. For a 2 and a half hour movie, it had absolutely no substance. Other than Prime, the rest of the transformers were pretty much unnecessary, it had half a story and an weak ending.
I hate Michael Bay though.

even though Beast Wars was different, it was still very good.
much better writing than the original transformers cartoon, and the computer animation was pretty neat, even though it fell short of pixar quality.

Transformers were in BeastWars, the last 2 episodes at least.
The first couple of series of Transformers were pretty lame like someone said earlier, but they sorted it out after that. Initially the plots didnt make sense, random people appeared and disappeared etc.

Saw the movie last saturday.
Sure the plot got thrown out the window towards the end, there were cheesy moments, some bad acting and at times it was just completely unrealistic (I wish I could jump off a motorbike and slide along the road on my back with no damage to myself or my clothing).
But overall I loved it, highly worth watching.

i just came back from watching this movie, and it blew me away. I grew up in the 90s, so i was a mega transformer fan. i mean, who wasn't? i had practically all the toys that came out and stuff. When i heard about this movie, i was really excited, but i didn't go watch it on the first day because of the ridiculous lines and i didn't want throngs of screaming children yelling out "is that a good guy or bad guy" everytime they see a robot. I read up on some websites, and saw that many people didn't think too highly of it. I've never heard of micheal bay or seen any of his films, so i walked into that theater unbiased.
I was totally blown away when i came out: the special effects were super awesome, and thats what i came there to see. A lot of people complained that the plot line was a bit spotty, which it was. But its a movie based on a 80's cartoon about giant transforming fighting robots..how much story do you need? Personally, if it had been the other way around, with mediocre effects and a good story i wouldn't have watched it. I thought the story about the allspark and stuff was convincing enough, and i can't stress how awesome the effects and robot animation was.
it wasn't just action though, there were a few moments of humor although at times it seemed a bit forced. it was very fast paced, and kept me to the edge of my seat the whole time. there were a few drawbacks though, such as not giving the robots enough character development. Out of the decepticons, only starscream, barricade, frenzy, and megatron talk, and the only autobots that talk a lot are optimus and ironhide. Plus i don't understand why they tried to develop some of the human characters, such as the lieutanant guy..personally i don't really care if he's married and has a baby..i just want to see robots fight. they should have had the robots talk and interact more. The director did a really good job with bumblebee though, that part near the end really made me feel sad.
so overall this movie was awesome, and i can't wait until it comes out on DVD so i can buy it. oh and megan fox is a super special added bonus :]

I have to say, I was dissapointed they didn't do a rendition of the original theme song for the movie. Also, about half way through the dialouge went to shiiiiit. The first half's dialouge was really funny, but then it just stopped making sense/started being cheeesey as hell. Action could have been better as well, IMO.

I just don't get why we can't make satisfying action films that care about the characters or bestow upon them actual personalities or brains. I mean, I get that the film is here to show a bunch of robots and flashy effects, but at least treat the audience with something that isn't so lifeless and dull. I think it's insulting to the audience, not the film or filmmakers, when people say things like "If you don't go in expecting much..." or "You go in looking for a brainless action flick..." because don't we deserve better? I don't want to expect less from a film. I want to be entertained. I mean, I can like a really dumb flick every now and then (The Hot Chicken, Darkness Falls, etc.), but those films had a quirky charm and characters I came to like. They didn't set out to be good or any more than they are, and they worked for it. Michael Bay has no idea how to make an action film in that way.

anyway, I had no idea a movie with fighting robots and an All-American rack could be so boring. oh right, probably because it was way too long (there was no good reason to make it over two hours long), the action scenes sucked (the editing didn't help, but the fighting scenes were pretty boring and sterile anyway, just normal Michael Bay bullshit only with giant robots), the Transformers had about as much personality as one of James Bond's cars, and the human characters were pointless and went nowhere.

in any movie, the story is told through the characters. if the characters aren't interesting or engaging, it makes it hard for the viewer to care about what's happening in the movie.
I don't understand why you're giving filmmakers the license to completely slack off on all the important parts of making a good movie.
edit: and it's not like all the time Bay spent not developing the characters was put to good use, because the action scenes weren't even all that good anyway. it seems like most of the time and effort in this movie was put into computer graphics and advertising.

It'd be one thing if Bay acted like they were one-dimensional (all the black characters, while annoying and stereotypically played, were obviously there for nothing more than comedic relief), but he bathes them in melodrama (Duhamel has a kid waiting for him back home! See wife cry at his expense! Don't bring up subplot until lame, tacked on ending!).

Because if they'd thought and acted like real people they would have run away and nothing would have happened.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. The characters were perfectly adequate for the plot, and don't even try to argue that John McClane or Terminator were "interesing and engaging."

A) Just because they risk their lives and run around with robots to fight other robots doesn't mean they can't say things or act out emotions like anybody else.
B) They're helluvalot more interesting and engaging than anyone in Transformers. At least McClane had some semblance of charm and wit, and at least Predator had the kind of interesting set up to make Arnold's horrible acting tolerable and suited for the film.

It's fair enough if you think the characters were boring, I didn't find anything wrong with them, but if anybody actually finds action movie characters to be "engaging" then they obviously operate on a higher plane of existence than I do.

I can find a film like The Island "engaging" but that doesn't make it smarter or better. I didn't find Transformers "engaging" at all, as opposed to Die Hard or other films of its ilk.

Well I was referring to Illmatic's criticism that the characters weren't engaging, which I assumed you agreed with since you took the point on. The argument is deertailing a bit and we're probably not going to get anywhere with it, but I just think your criticism of the characters holds true for the entire genre.

it was decent enough, nothing amazing by any means, but the dialogue sucked and it seemed like it could have used some more editing time.
as for the john mcclane issue, he played the part perfectly. if you're talking about lack of depth from characters in the first die hard though, you need to stfu, alan rickman played one of the most interesting villains of all time in that movie

I know this isn't going to hold true with a lot of people, but Tom Cruise seemed pretty genuine and had some amount of depth in the Mission Impossible series, most notably the last one. Kill Bill, which was, in essence, a paper thin plot perfect for an action film, made Beatrix Kiddo a multi-dimensional action hero. Children of Men, by definition alone, was a sci-fi action thriller, more poignant for its characters and their plight then any of the special effects or action sequences could attest for, even though they were all superb.
I just think you're writing off the genre too quick and giving in to easily to just let Transformers lack of any sort of depth because it's fit "for the genre," which has many staples that would say otherwise.

Those "ten minutes of film" aren't meant to be shown in that order or spliced together so as a representation of the film, it's about as worthless as a trailer of a film. You can tell if you think the film will be good or not, but doesn't mean you can warrant a full opinion on it off it. Telling us you saw ten minutes of the film when in actuality you saw some trailer kind of nullifies whatever you're trying to dissuade us of.

That's a bit of an exaggeration. The characters were perfectly adequate for the plot, and don't even try to argue that John McClane or Terminator were "interesing and engaging."
they obviously were on some level, because Die Hard and Terminator were damn good movies.
and also, "interesting and engaging" don't necessarily mean "realistic".
edit: Wotan: watching ten minutes of a two hour movie is like listening to a 30 second itunes clip of a song; you might like it, but it doesn't always give you the best idea of what the real thing is like

Beast Wars was so awesome. That'd be a killer movie.

Was it aimed squarely at a teenage boy market? Remember the whole Transformer concept is based on kids toys and a kids TV show.
just because 8 year olds are going to show up doesn't mean that the company is hoping to get as much as they can get out of the 11-16 age market. sexual humor is going to be prevalent. the film is PG-13.

o.m.f.g.
This movie was awesome. I loved seeing the Transformers duke it out in the city at that final battle.
Was there anything else that happened at the end credits, besides Witwicky's parent's talking about government secrets and Starscream blasting off into space?

So is Starscreams escape mean a sequel?

Possibly, nothing is set in stone yet but everyone involved was made to sign contracts to make a sequel if the studio chose to make one.

That would be kind of neat, but I really don't think it'll be as good. The parts where you're introduced to the characters and what not help make this one good, and the next one if having mostly the same characters would probably end up being boring.

There were only 5 autobots & about 6 or 7 deceptiocons in the first movie so I would imagine they would introduce a whole new bunch of transformers into a sequel.

Exactly, there is a whole Transformers Universe to go through.
But still, I've never been a huge fan of sequals, in my opinion, most movies hit classics by a stroke of luck- and usually they aren't lucky to do that twice in a row =/

Coulda had a little bit more of Starscream

Coulda had a little bit more of intelligence. I guess it's inappropriate to call it an awful film, though it was awful, but it sure had amazing visuals. The script was miserable. "I'd bet my ridiculous salary..." that this movie could have any script and succeed.

In that case, bring on a sequel.
except don't because it'll be just as bad

I was referring to the human characters... hardly any of the actual transformers characters were developed at all.

True. I think a sequel would work well though.

How? Megatron dies, along with Jazz, Blackout, and Devastator. Starscream's the only decepticon on the loose.

You sound like you never saw the original Transformers series, there are butt loads of Autobot/Decepticon characters for the writers to call on.

It could go like it did in the cartoon series when Starscream takes off and build his own army of transformers
plus his love of Megatron could lead him to rebuilding himself in megatrons form
The next film would see the likes of the autobots intergrating into the US society and workforce (Constructacons were awesome and a massive franchise years ago)

and just maybe, the next movie could see the autobots evolve into beasts
