I was won over by the opening titles to be fair. Plus some of the artwork is the best of seen of any anime.

But yeah the gore does play an important part.

There are more than 2 decent animes in the world.

Pretty much anything by Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Porco Rosso, Howl's Moving Castle) is good.

Then you haven't watched much anime. It's artwork was pretty bland. Stereotypical Tokyo/countryside settings and standary multicolor-haired women and short dark-haired dudes.

The opening sequence is very promising, but the rest doesn't deliver. Just like Bebop and X and Read or Die and countless other anime that deliver an amazing first episode (Though Read or Die did have two amazing mid-series episodes, and Bebop had the Movie and 4 episodes worth or real story) only to dissapoint from then on out. At least Lied was only 13 episodes long.

And thanks for the Miyazaki posts. If anybody's looking for pop-punk recommendations they should check out this band called Greenday. They're really good...

1) Why do animes all have such retarded names? (not to mention animation, dialogue, voiceovers, plots and premises)
2) Why are nerds so heavily attracted to anime? (and if you're going to get all defensive about this like some nerd on another forum I posted this on then don't bother)

Kithkin

1 - All? There are dozens of anime made every year in japan. Are all of our comedys good? Our dramas? 90% of everything is crap.

1 - Because they generally originate in Japan, the English names are usually chosen by vice presidents trying to make a quick buck (and hence, you get Samurai X for Rouruni Kenshin... a character who was the polar opposite of a samurai)

() - Depends on the anime, but most americanized anime have had their plots altered and voices poorly overdubbed to save costs and make plots "easier" to understand. Also, long anime tend to be filled with filler, plot arcs not written by the manga author, because they have new episodes 40-46 weeks out of the year. Since manga and anime come out once a week, but anime usually covers about 3-5 issues of the manga, long running anime eventually catch up the the manga (see Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, Dragon Ball).

() - Regarding the animation, most action anime skimp on basic animation (the talking, the walking, the plot exposition) in order to focus on the fight scenes. If you think the major fight scenes in Naruto (fight with the mirrors, bushy eyebrows vs gaara, naruto vs sasuke) or Kenshin (ep 31) or Bebob (1, movie) or Read or Die (1, 11 or 12). It's not like they have disney level operating budgets. Besides, even though their budgets are typically less than American cartoons, the animation is still generally far better (aside from Fosters Home and Teen Titans and a few others)

2 - Nerds aren't really attracted to the anime you're talking about. Anime that has been americanized is only really appealing to younger kids. Nerds tend to download it subtitled from Japan. Plenty of non-nerds like it if they're introduced to the non-crappy ones. Also, anime is far better at doing Sci-fi than anything live action.

im not a nerd (depends on ur def) and im not heavily attracted to anime but it's just art i haven't devoured yet and i have no prejudices so im going about satiating my anime curiosity however dorky or retarded it is

The ones already mentioned. However, Evangelion's overdubs are generally very well-done, with the exception of how Gendou's voice changed when he added lines on the 'deleted' scenes for the Platinum Edition.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and its subsequent season are very enjoyable. I really digged the continuing story arcs in both series, respectively, compared to their 'stand-alone' episodes. But that doesn't mean you should skimp over the stand-alone episodes either.

Anyone suggested Bleach yet? Awesome series.

07-02-2007, 11:13 AM
Never got into bleach despite how everyone raves about it.

Death Note is pretty interesting.

And as far as animes having bad plots I disagree. The good ones are far superior to 80% of hollywood movies storywise.

FLCL is definitely high on my list of Anime.

FLCL is great... only 6(?) episodes though.
Elfen Lied
Love Hina is funny/stupid/perverted/good
Cowboy Bebop
Battle Programmer Shirase
the Tenchi Muyo trilogy was alright.

I also watched I''S all the way through but I don't know if I'd recommend it.

and idk if Battle Royale has an anime but the manga and movie were cool.
