Notation vs Tab?

I can't read standard notation, but I can read and write tab. According to my more musically adept friends, this means I am not a "good" musician, but my bass tutor at college tells me that being able to read tab is just as good as being able to read notation. Just wanted to know your opinions on this!

Either way is fine, whatever works really. Same with like holding a pick, some people use one finger and some use two, it just makes it easier on the player. Overall, I think its better to just listen to a song to pick it up that way instead :thumb:
