He truly is amazing to watch. I watched him nearly the whole time.

Yeah, it's a tough call. There are few people on the planet who are comparable to Gavin on a technical level, and his feel is GREAT (a combination seemingly unheard of in today's music scene). Danny's got some sick chops, though (rarely seen in Tool), and his feel is incredible...I'd say they're about even overall.
Sean Reinert is also up there.

I was going to go to that Porcupine Tree gig, but I couldn't get tickets :/
On the flipside, I'll be seeing Sean Reinert with Cynic tomorrow night :D

i was just thinking this after the concert. I honestly think he could give danny carey a GOOD run for his money.
I'll make the call for sure when i see carey live on July 9.

Lucky bastard!! :p Enjoy the show, man...I can't wait until they come here.
heh, I missed Cynic on graspop..buts thats okay, since I`ll see them tomorrow as well :) Good supportact! I did see Atheist on Graspop, that ruled. Aerosmith was the best tho :D
Pure Reason Revolution opened up for PT, good UK band; not as "proggy" but very melodic and some nice (toolish) guitarplaying.

hey man thats awesome you got to see them live! well since we're on the subject of porcupine tree maybe some of you fans can help me out! few months ago there was a post about stuff to do to get better and someone mentioned learning to play the sound of muzak. well i decided id download the song and listen to it and i fell in love with it. my question to you is what are your guys favorite songs cause i want to get some more. should i just buy and album? if so which one. i was thinking in abstentina (however you spell it) cause it got the highest rating but i wanna know your guys opinion. also idk if this is true or not but i heard that they have a new cd coming out? is that true?

Deadwing and In Absentia are probably your best bets. Gavin has only drummed on those two albums and the latest one (Fear of a Blank Planet), Chris Maitland was the drummer for the albums before In Absentia.
I saw PT live about 2 months ago, I couldn't take my eyes off Harrison ... he just made it look so simple.

Briefly. I believe we drove through there...the only place in England that I went was Stratford (saw Macbeth. :o ), but we drove there from Scotland.

Gavin's easily the best prog drummer in the world, as a long time PT fan I've been yapping on about him for years and finally he's getting his well due credit.
Guys like Carey don't even get close to him, he just blows them away.

Hmm...I think that Gavin would actually disagree with you on that. When I spoke to him, he talked about Carey with an almost reverent tone.

That's because Gav's a very modest guy. I've spoken to him too (even if it was over the internet). He speaks about lots of guys and has nothing but good things to say about everyone.
Danny's an absolute gun, and quite likely an influence to Gavin, but in reality Gavin does anything Danny can do but better. I've never heard anything Danny's done that blown me away anywhere near like how Gavin has. To me a lot of people seem to look at Danny with Rose coloured glasses.
To me they're not in the same league. That just my opinion anyway :)

I don't need rose coloured glasses to find playing groups of 5 over 4 in a creative and musical way impressive. :p
I wouldn't say that Gavin can do anything Danny can do better...in fact, I would say that Danny does everything Gavin does ALOT better. The difference is that Gavin also does alot more.
To me, Danny has one of the best senses of groove/feel for rock music, which is what sets him apart. It's not simply that he can do insane things...but rather that he can make them sound so GOOD.
Gavin's got a great feel as well, particularly for a prog drummer...but at times he CAN sound a little stiff.

I dunno. I just never got into bands like Porcupine Tree, Tool or DT. Just not my style. For whatever reason im a big fan of Rush, but other bands in the genre I just dont like.

Porcupine Tree and Tool sound nothing like DT...and not a whole like eachother...I dunno if I'd say they're in the same genre. *shrug*

Hehe thats cool. I see everything you've said about Danny the same way for Gavin :) To me, Gavin has the utmost in taste. I just totally connect with his playing. But I guess in the end that's what it comes to - taste.
To say Gavin can sound a little stiff though... blasphemy!
It's all good!
