Well i have a tryout later on today and i am pretty nervous. First off let me tell you a bit about my style and what is making me nervous. I am a huge Tool fan and am used to playing with one guitarist in a band so i have been told that i am a cross between Justin Chancellor and Timmy C. The band i have to audition for is pure metal and i am not used to playing much metal, the heaviest things i play are system of a down, Deftones, Korn. So i am nervous and am wondering if you guys think that playing metal is gonna be easy for me considering i usually play very melodic and Catchy Riffs. Here is the band http://www.myspace.com/beforethefiremetal

They asked me to learn the song they have posted on there page, but its hard to hear the bass in that recording so i pretty much came up with my own lines.

Please tell me what you guys think, i am nervous.

The bass isn't that hard to hear, easier than most metal really. Its not complex, just get the rhythm right and play in key and you'll have it down.

And don't worry about it, if you know you are good enough to pull it off then just enjoy yourself, I had a tryout for a bass position the other day and I was nervous as hell but I had most of the songs I had to learn down and my playing was on form so it went really well, pretty fun too. Just enjoy yourself.

These guys dont play any covers at all. There are two guitarist and one plays through a peavey 5150 and the other has a peavey 6505 plus they both use Mesa cabs. There old bassist was actually a guitar playerwho was one of the best guitarist i have met, and was way better than there current 2 guitarist, its just he is too busy and isnt really having much fun playing bass. That song is recorded in drop C. I came up with something thats basically C, G,C,F,G,C,D,D,F, A, C I am not sure if its correct, I play the pre chorus and the intro the same as the recording though. All i can hear is alot of open notes and hammer ons.

Thanks man. I hope its gonna be alot easier than i think it is. Its just scary because i have never played any death metal, so when i goto learn all there originals i dont think its gonna be a walk in the park. I am just gonna keep my eyes glued to the guitarist most of the time And follow the rythymn guy. Because thats what they want. They told me they dont want a les Claypool.

Thats what i am thinking. If i hit a wrong note dont quit, i think i should hurry and correct it and keep going without falling out of the pocket with the drummers rythymn.

nice to see another michigander on here ...

good luck. as much as they'll be looking at your bass playing, they are also looking for someone to fit in the band, personality wise. keep that in mind.

GKBassman, how did it go?

I had an audition with a thrash metal band, it's not my kind of music so I wasn't that motivated to play their stuff, I just wanted gigs and some cash. Didn't get in though. And you know when you audition, you'll go away and a few weeks later, the band will ring you and say "oh hi, yeah sorry, we really liked what you did but we've found our guy, he does such and such a little better".

Well they couldn't be arsed to do that. Really are the most arrogant bunch of cocks ever. Their music is crap too, which is a shame as they're damn good musicians. Wrong genre for them.

What makes it worse was 2 of them live down the road from me, could have even come to my house and have a chat or something, they drive past it every day!

Yeah I always tried to throw myself in over my head with stuff that'd really push me and force me to improve, so I've tried for and not got into a couple of bands in my earlier days, I HATED when people did that and just left you hanging.

Well it didnt go as smooth as planned. They wanted me to follow to their guitarist 24/7 so didnt know any of his licks and they were pretty fast so i felt on the spot and was having a hard time picking them up. But they showed all the pieces for there one song and i told them that i would definitly be able to have it down in a day or so of my own time. They told me they have one more tryout this Sunday. First thing they said to me is damn you know this is a metal band right? And i said yeah why, he said well thats a big pedal board you have there and probably wont ever need any of those pedals. Most of those pedals came from playing Tool Covers. Who knows, only time will tell.
