Saw these pictures over at TB. For those of you not in the loop, Ernie Ball is releasing a 6 string Bongo sometime (originally at Summer NAMM, but I think there was speculation it was going to be pushed back further?). Anyway, there've been pictures of prototypes out, but these are actual finished ones.

Thoughts, opinions?

Personally, I've always been very stalwart in my hate of the Bongo aesthetic, but there's something about these thing looks more... proper. I dunno.

Discuss plz. :)

I still don't like the looks of Bongo's at all.

But neat non the less.

I'll have to try it to make sure I like the neck, but looking at the pictures my GAS is so intense. That white one is absolutely gorgeous.
They are going to cost a ton though.

Not into the 4 string as I would only play slap on a 4 string.

I play everything else on a 6 string, and Bongo's have one of the best tones.

Really looking forward to this.

i'll bet they sound neat...but they're just so ****ing ugly. i mean ****, i'd be inclined to ask who knocked it up, looks like the bass is pregnant or something...

I thought the pictures of the prototype didn't look very promising, but now that its all finished up,it looks awesome, especially that white one.

seeing a bongo in a 6 string is somewhat reminiscent of the feeling I had when I learned that Porsche was releasing an SUV. I just don't think it's the right brand/style combo.

As a proud Bongo owner, you probably don't realize this, but Bongo's only look ugly to other bassist. And a lot of that is due to the weird colours it comes in. It looks like it would be a bit neck heavy.

I actually like the look of Bongos when they have the right color combo, but the sixer doesn't look. . . right? It looks fat, almost like its pregnant. I probably wouldn't go for it.

For me, it's just MORE bass to dislike. I admit I'm partial to the bongo tone, but making it bigger and fatter just makes me hate the aesthetics more.

And that is one huge-arse humbucker.

well there are exceptions. A lot of people came up to me at the Talkbass GTG and said that they always thought Bongo's were ugly until they saw and played one for them selves. I think colour scheme has a lot to do with it.

Bongo's in blue don't work.

If bongos were good looking basses they'd lose a lot of their appeal. They're right because they're wrong.

Very Possible this could be my next bass.
nothing compares to my sting, i need a 6. I string my 5s with a high C, so i need a low B. and this could very well be the bass thats gives me a B.

as soon as i saw bongos, i figured there would be a 6-string version at some time or another. The shape just lends itself to ERBs.

I won't be getting one. Only MusicMans I like are stingrays.

Not QUITE as nice as i was expecting (i always thought a 6 string bongo would be the ultimate nice looking bass) but cool none the less.

The one thing I really don't like about this bass (besides the presumably insane price tag) is that the upper fret access looks abysmal. Not something that would really bother me, I don't play up there too much and if I do it's tapping, but it's still a pretty noticeable design flaw.

That actually looks way better to me than your dargie. I personally think buttercream with tort guard bongos look the best. And I don't agree with you that non bassists don't think they look ugly, considering a bass to most non-bassists looks like a P bass, and a bongo looks like a P basses nerdy cousin.

I think if Ernie Ball sucked it up and redesigned the bongo into something that people don't have to force themselves to like they'd sell a lot more. It pisses me off, I want Bongo elecs and pups in a 'ray body.

there is a contour there so its not as bad as you think it is. Its hard to to get the B-E strings though. Camera phone picture to show what I mean.

does anyone think that the bongo has a certain "look" to it?

like, ESPs and B.C. Richs look "metal" and some p-basses look "R&B"

what does bongo strike you as?

Well you see them in metal, jazz, funk, R&B, Rock... I think its the universal bass.

i was thinking Funk and Metal for them myself, depending on the color.

like, at the metal show i went to last nite, a bassist was using a bongo.

but if it were that orange one with gray pickguard, i think funk.

Akira
06-14-2007, 09:43 AM
I don't really see them as metal.

Actually, I understand the universal bass thing. I love the look, but a lot of people don't. So getting one really is putting sound totally above looks. Whether or not you like them aesthetically, they sound and play gorgeous.

Why not just take the pre-amp of a bongo, an put it into a somewhat good looking bass.

That way, you could get an awesome tone, and not have a super ugly bass.

Can you buy the preamps seperately? I'm considering throwing another pickup on my 'ray, and putting a bongo preamp in.

And that is my view on Bongos.

Pwned by your own burn.

I'd like to know if you could buy the pre-amps separately. I doubt it though. Else there would be far less bongos and more better looking basses that sound like bongos.

of course they make a left hand version. Everything at EBMM isn't made till its ordered you can pretty much order a single bass straight from the factory. That means just because its not on MF doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Yes, what a lot of people don't realize is that you can order the exact bass you want through a retailer. You choose all the options, you don't have to look for one. Like he said, they make everything by order.

I'm not saying that they don't, but the fact that you can order from the factory is irrelevant to whether or not the factory makes a lefty.
