View Full Version : Raking?

I'm pretty confused about raking, I've never really given it much thought, but is it a bad thing? good thing? even an important thing?

Would eliminating raking from my playing clean it up at all?

I think Jaco describes some pretty good pros and cons about it at around 8:30.

Mainly its just what you feel comfortable with.

Thanks man, I probably should've searched it in the first place.

Thanks for that link too, I've never really thought about how playing while resting on the different pickups could be so useful.

I like blowers myself.

blowers are CHAOS. Storm from X-Men couldn't effectively use a blower. it's the equivalent of using a tornado as a vacuum cleaner.

You can't hope to be a competent bassist unless you master raking.

Raking is okay as long as you master your muting with the left hand, else it can sound awful.

Throwback to my old thread:

I actually took the time to work raking out of my technique (unless the bassline I'm playing specifically suits being raked (usually 'double mute' type stuff, Jacos 'Come on Come Over' is an example of a bassline I'd still rake the mutes on). I find that articulating each note individually made almost no noticeable change to my tone, but it did allow me to keep rhythm and get into 'the groove' easier, play tighter and reach plus maintain faster speeds more easily on speedy lines.

Jaco sounds like more of an old man than I imagined, I guess I've never heard him talk before. I've always pictured him as sounding exactly like Jimmy Fallon.

Raking is a funky little trick but i think some people over use it. Much like double thumbing etc. As long as your muting is clean then there is no reason to eliminate it from your playing.

Sounds like a stupid idea, seems more difficult and slower.

I still don't get this. How is using the same finger when you are going down strings slower?

peeted
06-14-2007, 10:02 AM
Its not, its like sweeping, if anything its faster.

One reason its easier to play some stuff faster is because if you rake it can lead you into having to lead with a different finger each bar, which can throw your rhythm off. Articulating each note individually means you can always lead off the same finger which simplifies things somewhat.

I guess I just don't think about it because I pick almost completely subconsciously.

As does everyone, but leading on the same finger every time means you are effectively halving the length of the bassline. Less chance to make mistakes and easier to commit to 'muscle memory'
