Guys listen to this. It's the closer from Finals. Finals as in when we won State Championships. I have a solo near the end of the song, so listen to the whole thing.

At first it sounds out of place, but it's an alright solo. You never overplay, no screw ups, thumbs up

Ah, cool man.
We were close to the top of our state in California. Upland High School, that's where I go. It's all thanks to our new director, he really turned our jazz program around.

Ha we've had the same director for as long as we've had the program, which is like 20 years, and this year is the first year we've ever won. Last year was the first year we ever placed in the top 3.

Ugh, your horns need work. Especially your trumpets, and its clear the director knows that. (Trumpet part doesn't go high at all) Its also clear that he knows you one of the better ones in the band. Also, the solos before the vibes, the Bari and Alto, terrible. Nice song though, ok solo, but it was the best one in the piece.

I agree with Sam. Your solo was great, drums were very good, but the rest of the band wasn't amazing.
Just out of curiosity, how many are you in this jazz band?

Just to give some constructive criticism on the solo:
The solo was good technically and musically, but it wasn't really from any sort of jazz tradition, and didn't have much cohesion. To me, it sounded like you were just pieces together cool little licks of various techniques (DTing, etc), which is cool, but you can't really grow much furthur in that direction. You see, in order for a solo to "work", there needs to be a unifying concept behind it. Phrasing has a lot to do with it (that comes with time and lots of listening, so I wouldn't worry too much about it), so does building momentum and pacing (climax, resolution, etc, which you did sort of), but also the concept of motivic development, which I didn't really hear much of. A technique improvisers use to give their solos cohesion is taking one idea and modifying it over and over again, in different sequences across the gamut, or in different rhythmic patterns (augmentation, diminution, modulation).
Just something to think about. The solo was probably the best out of the bunch.

Well, it wasn't DTing, It was just OHP. Yeah what you said about motivic development and cohesion...I really have no idea what it is. I wish I did. I never really learned how to solo or anything, I wish I did so I'd be more comfortable with it but I don't really take anything into account when making solos besides sound and direction.

And it shows, it doesn't make it bad. To the average ear, that was a really good solo. But if you want to take it further, work on your phrasing, that was something that I didn't like, knowing when you were going to start. And that progression made you its bitch. Don't be afraid to add some tension to the solo but going in a different direction (note wise) for a little while, thus building it up and then the release when you get back into the key.

Yeah I really wish I knew how to do that stuff. I can't figure it out though...

Sense that there should be a thread on this *

Adam, make a bass solo thread. Phrasing, style, chord tension etc. Cause you have alot more to say than I do.
