hi guys, i was looking for a stompbox that could get me somewhere in the region of the tone the guy from DFA 1979 had, but without spending a couple of grand lol. i'm a newbie from guitar, but have a tanglewood bass through an ashdown MAG combo. im sorta clueless on effects, any suggestions? cheers

I have heard that Big Muffs can get a DFA-type sound, but I don't actually know.

The big muff doesn't have the high end for the DFA sound, best bet might be a guitar distortion/OD + an EQ pedal?

big muff, seriously.
full on sustain and about halfway up on the tone, volume to suit.
I honestly do that, and leave my amp's EQ flat and I can get a decent DFA tone. Single coil jazz bass pickups also suit, with more bridge pick up than neck pickup.

I dunno if a big muff can get you a really great DFA type of sound, but it will deffinately give you a great distorted sound.I've heard that with the right settings you can get pretty close with a boss ODB-3 though.

have you heard Robert Sledge's tone on Ben Folds Five's "Whatever and Ever, Amen"?
best use of Big Muff on bass ever.
i dig my big muff on both guitar and bass.

I usually don't like fuzz bass, but Sledge's tone amazing. Just pure sex. Have you heard it live? Fattest, most awesome live bass tone I have ever heard.

Yeah. I'm glad that Ben kept on using that tone after the band broke up.
$20 says it was the NYC.
$20 says i don't know. hell i'd pay $20 for the wooden box, rather then $80 for the POS inside.

Seriously, I owned the Russian Model and have played on the NYC verison, terrible sounds, no versatility, I'm sad I ever bought it. (although Im happy I sold it.)
i wish i had sold it on eBay or something. i just wanted quick cash so i took it to a pawn shop.
20 bucks.
GG.

For $80, it was probably the NYC one, (the silver one).

The black Russian made one retains low end better, but its personal preference for which one you think sounds best.

I've got the USA version (the silver one) and i really like it. I went for it because supposedly it can handle a little more abuse and i didn't want to risk breaking a pedal.
IMO, it looks and sounds ace, plus it can take AC power but the russian one can't.

i got me one of those 9v> ac adapter for my russian muff so it can ruff off of ac power.
and seriously, why is everyone hating on the muff?
i think the lack of muse popularity means the muff is less appreciated.
everyone? aside from myself, there's like one other person in here who doesn't like it...
and i love Muse.
