So every time i try to put strings on my Ibanez btb 406 the action becomes ridiculously low, too low to even play. I try to change the action but to no avail, any ideas?

If you've tried trussrod adjustment and bridge adjustment, and nothing's working. Check out the slots on your nut, they may be too deep. If it only happens when you change strings and somehow gets better, physics hates you.

do you take the old strings off for a long periods of time before putting the new ones on?

are the strings a much different gauge than your bass is used to?

it sounds like the truss rod, you should try loosening it; however, if you have no expierience with doing so i reccommend you take it to a shop.

Sounds like a screwed up bridge to me. Do you see the saddles actually move up when you raise the action? Do they lower themselves randomly? I doubt it's the truss rod, as necks are made very well these days. If it is, well then... good luck.

And, I would like to add:

And people complain about Fenders

This might be a silly question.... Once you put the strings back on the bass, you tuned them to pitch didn't you?

Any idea what they do to make it all better? Sprinkle pixie dust on the fretboard? Rub the neck down with Dr. Zimmerman's Miracle Cream? Give it a shot of Nyquil?

just a shot in the dark but i think they might have adjusted the action.

or they made a flux capacitor and went back in time to restore the bass to its previous set-up.

one or the other.

I am thinking the latter.
