Atleast read for the pics.. lol
Hey Guys,
I feel bad for neglecting you guys but when school starts I try to steer away from things what will distract me. I also lived in the canyons in Arizona for a few months, rock climbing and just getting away. I lived on a catholic mission with in the native american reservation. Great experience, took place in a ceremonial Navajo swear lodge. Amazing. Also will be teaching music at a local highschool this summer and when they need me in the fall.. drumline has never really had a structured program so i'm in for a treat.. lol
But fortunetly now I have graduated highschool so I have much more time and I am going off to college, so where to Tyler?...oops I mean, Tang?
Well I auditioned for Loyola New Orleans jazz program, a prestigious one where Johnny Vidocovich is the drum instructor and where Stanton Moore graduated from. Currently they have the Thelonious Monk foundation teaching there, with people like Herbie Hancock and other modern jazz greats teaching.
I made it in and with academic/service and music scholarships I got 23 grand in scholarships and grants.. unfortunetly the school costs 38 a year so I was out about 15 grand, i'm paying for college by myself and the loans didn't go through.
So i'm off to University of Southern Mississippi for two years, which also has a nice percussion faculty John Wooten and Marty Hurley being some of them, then off to go learn under Vidocovich and major in Music Industry Studies.
Well enough about that, and I am seriously doubting anyone really gives a ****, so how about some pics of my drumset i've refinished?!
Most people get tattoos or peircings after they graduate..which I plan on getting but.. I decided..i'm going to redo my crappy pearl forum.
Before!!

Arizona, huh?
Where in?
I know, reservation, Navajo, blah blah blah, but like everywhere in AZ is a reservation.

Yeah, thats not my set up, I was just seeing how it looks put together.
I play tom and floor tom, crash, ride and aux crash.. but for a shitty pearl forum I think I made it look quite classy lol.

Ahh i'm making to many replies in a row!!!
But yes Ben, It took me two days..
because i'm a beast lol
If I took rests and breaks and slept like I should have haha.. It would've taken about three or four days..
It was just looking so hot I wanted to get it done asap..
The only tedious part is taking the hardware off and sanding and getting rid of glue.. The staining and clear coating is easy and fun.. it dries quick so you can put a few coats on in a very short amount of time.. but then you have to put allll the hardware back on..thats the only time consuming part..

Ah, tha's cool.
Yeah.
I'm just...near...the Mexican border.
Like an hour south of Tucson.
Sierra Vista.
Nobody's ever heard of it, and honestly, nobody ever needs to.

Y'know, I took pictures of my surrounding area...maybe I'll post them someday or something.
I really don't think anybody [except the other 2 MXDPers who live in AZ] understands what it's like to live in Sierra Vista.
I mean, I dunno, mountains have lost their novelty.
I practically live in a very large crater, there are mountains on every side.
One of 'em is like 15 minutes away...I drove my car up it once.
Haha but no, I don't want to like, detract from everything, that's really cool and stuffs ><
Tang.
06-06-2007, 10:12 PM
Yes.. but wood hoops are like..I think 60 minimum a hoop these days..
So.. 120+.. or.. a free black hoop?
I'd go with the free.
CombatWombat3
06-06-2007, 10:17 PM
Yeah...exactly. The wood hoops are just too expensive for me.
I recently updated the guide, Ive learned a LOT since I first wrote it like a year and a half ago. I really wish I knew everything I know now when I did it the first time. It would have turned out so much better...
Tang.
06-06-2007, 10:21 PM
Yeah, I noticed some..not really flaws but..questionable bits.
Just info that would have worked but doing them a seperate way wouldnt've mattered.
It was still an awesome guide and helped me alot.
It's the perfect guide to staining a kit, it also helped knowing I was staining the same kit the guide was written for.

06-06-2007, 10:24 PM
Hey...think you could do me a favor? I made a thread a while ago with my updated refinishing guide. If I bumped it, could you read through and tell me what you think?
Tang.
06-06-2007, 10:25 PM
When did you update it? Because I used your guide this week and it was spot on.. I'll still go over it with you.
CombatWombat3
06-06-2007, 10:29 PM
Wait...did you use the one from the lessons? I can't edit my lesson for some reason, so I just posted it in a thread here. Didn't get much attention though.
Tang.
06-06-2007, 10:30 PM
Sure, i'll check it out.
I used the one from the lesson.

Sweet. Can I ask what you did differently? Your result is beautiful.
Tang.
06-06-2007, 11:36 PM
Different amount of coats of stain and clear coat.
I used a lighter cherry wood, I purposely streaked the bass drum darker in some places, unfortunetly it looked stupid on the my test tom I used so I chose not to do it on the toms.
I didn't use as many coats of clear coat, nor did I let it dry 3-4 hours in between. I noticed that the stain and clear coat dried very quickly.. I still would recommend waiting a few hours.. Just to be safe..
I did different shadings on every tom, so different coats.. I tried to keep the toms even..I think I used 2-3 on the toms.. then floor tom and bass drum I basically just had fun with.. If you could see every angle it almost fades into three different shades.. I did it purposely so it looks like I did it purposely rather than looking like I majorly screwed up lol
So all in all I just did different drying periods and different coats..
VENTS SUCK! I took one off and accidently scratched the drum in the process..fixed it with sanding.. the rest, I actually just pulled the wrap off in a way where it left a small small amount of wrap with no bending the vents at all.. I got rid of the remaining wrap with some of those small cosmetic scissors..

nice refinish job...but now you see why they wrap those drums right? :P
nothing you can control of course, irregular grains are what wraps are for...but hey, natural wood > pearl wraps anyday!
good job

Nice job
But
Hmm, I think you should get some new tom mounts
Those L shape mounts are so bad
And it makes it look like a beginner kit
Just saying...

Pearl Forums are beginners kits,man.
Tang's no beginner on the drums anyways.
It's the player,not the kit.

Yeah I know all that, but im just saying, it would make it look much better.
Tang.
06-07-2007, 01:48 PM
yeah chipple,
it turns out the majority of the music teachers there are pretty famous.
Vidacovich ( http://drummerworld.com/drummers/Johnny_Vidacovich.html ) is the drum instructor.
The music industry instructors are two grammy award winning producers.. i'm drawing a blank right now.. and the third instructor is the founding trumpet player of the dirty dozen brass band.
It's also such a small school that all the music classes are such an intimate setting.. i'll be there in two years, was hoping to be there this fall but it'll be worth the wait.
And no, i'm no beginner to drums lol. The forum was given to me after the hurricane. I lost my old kit as long as everything I and my family owned.
My friends and family put money together and got me it for christmas. So it's very sentimental to me..
I agree it would look better with some new mounts.. but hey, i'm liking it right now lol.

There's really no point in replacing the mounts if the only reason you're doing it is looks. They're not worth the money to replace them, even if you want a better sound. The sound would improve a little, but unless you have no choice but to stay with a pearl forum forever, I see very little value in replacing things. In terms of ease of mounting, I just bought two multi-clamps (30 bucks total) that I can use, and when I replace the set I can use them for the rest of my kit.

To the drummers that see my set.. and the ones that give a **** about mounts might say it looks like a begginer set, but for the most part.. the majority of the people that will be looking at my set will be people just there to have a good time.
I highly doubt that they will be rocking along and say..
Hey.. those mounts look like beginner mounts.. i'm pissed, we're leaving!
Yeah..dont think that'll happen.
