I just bought a BassBalls. It's actually pretty cool. What have you guys run across that you though was really good?

We were hanging out at my old drummers house and realised his brother had a WHammy pedal. So we plugged it in, quite a bit of fun.

Acoustic simulator!

Still have no idea if it works with bass or not.

For bass, I love the Small Stone. My favorite guitar pedal is definitely the Blues Driver.

I want a Blues Driver. I just got a guitar, and since I am playing it through my bass amp I have no distortion.

I trust your taste in music, so what distortion unit do you like?

Jody LeCompte
06-06-2007, 01:42 PM
For guitar or bass?

I managed to get a somewhat decent tone with the blues driver, but 60% of time you just sound like youve got too much lowend overpowering your speakers rather than the sound of an overdriven amp.

Guitar. I want a nice bluesy overdrive. Something organic sounding, and not too harsh.
I might just buy a Valve Junior and overdrive it naturally.

Zvex's Ringtone, Tremorama, Lo Fi Loop Junkie, and ooh Wah

All of you have to check out this guy's pedals. Effing crazyness.

Jody LeCompte

Valve Juniors don't sound all that great by themselves. The main reason people buy them is because its an all tube amp for $130 dollars and modding them is becoming absurdly popular.

What kind of bluesy tone are you after? Kind of fuzzy Hendrix/SRV blues-rock, Id assume?

Akira
06-06-2007, 01:49 PM
Yeah, kind of the SRV thing, or even just a nice grit. Nothing intense.

You'd probably like the Big Muff, although my favorite dirt box is the EHX English Muff'n.

You won't be playing too much srs grim metal, but you can dial in pretty much any distortion from 80s hair metal to 60's rockabilly pretty easily if you twiddle around. Maybe even a respectable metallica-esque metal tone. Maybe....

That sounds good. I hate srs grim metal, but I love hair metal and rockabilly has cool tone.

Watched the other demo, sounds pretty hawt.

I've jammed with a rockabilly guitarist quite a few times in the last few months.

Doing the upright slap thing on electric bass is so fun, srs.

Akira
06-06-2007, 01:58 PM
The only problem with the Muff'n is that the price tag is brutal.

Jody LeCompte
06-06-2007, 01:59 PM
It's a genuine tube distortion though.

You would get a similar tone with a standard big muff, but not quite as organic.

Akira
06-06-2007, 02:01 PM
It would be really nice if I could try it through a bass amp. If it sounds that good through a bass amp, it would be cheaper than buying an amp and a distortion pedal.

Jody LeCompte
06-06-2007, 02:02 PM
I bought a 450 some-odd dollar fender amp and the EQ ended up being worthless so I find that I just play through the eden. I just eq it a bit trebly by bass standards and it normally comes out alright because I use 13s anyway.

Akira
06-06-2007, 02:03 PM
In my experience, my damn Fender Rumble is a better guitar amp then bass amp anyways. I will definitely think about this pedal.

Jody LeCompte
06-06-2007, 02:05 PM
As long as you roll the lows down and kick up the treble you should be alright. It will take a bit of tweaking because your bass amp is going to want to favor the lower notes(which can be a bit of a problem with more open ended chords) but it's possible.

Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss use bass amps for their guitars.

Akira
06-06-2007, 02:07 PM
Yeah. They probably use good amps though.
But yeah, right now this is my favorite option.

Actually, if I use the effects loop in on my amp, won't that just bypass the amp's EQ anyways?

Jody LeCompte
06-06-2007, 02:09 PM
I couldn't tell you.

Any pedal I've ever used I just set infront of my amp like a 12 year old in a Nirvana cover band.

Akira

Jody LeCompte

I don't know much about amps at all, because my bass approach is so simple "Heres my special effect, it's a cable, it makes my bass loud when I plug it into that golden thing"

Its even worse with guitar because Im such a religious acoustic player, I just make stuff work in the way that makes sense to me and sounds decent.

Akira
06-06-2007, 02:23 PM
Yeah. On bass I am pretty much bass-cable-amp. I have a chorus pedal that totally hums out on bass, so I play clean. Bass effects don't have that much appeal to me. Now guitar, that is different, but I am new to electric guitar.

Jody LeCompte
06-06-2007, 02:26 PM
I'm pretty new to electric guitar as well.

I've only had my musicman since....January I think.

Ive heard of a voicebox for bass, forgot what site had it, be interesting to hear.

Zapp And Roger have a song called More Bounce To The Ounce, where the bass player uses a voicebox, (you can download the song on limwire I think). Kind of cheesy sounding, but still sorta neat.

I like my Boss RC20XL a lot. That and the sansamp bass driver DI are the only pedals I use, though I'd for sure use a mutron III and a badass bass synth pedal if I had the cash for them.

Akira: definitely look into the English Muff'n, its a great pedal for what you're looking for. Unless you're planning on getting some kind of tube guitar amp with something like a tubescreamer or Bad Monkey, use your bass amp with the english Muff'n. i've tried it on a crappy SS guitar amp and it was good so it'll be awesome with a good bass amp.

as for the thread.... (both guitar and bass pedals mixed)

Digitech Bad Monkey, EHX Small Clone, EHX Big Muff, Dunlop 105Q Crybaby, EXH Q-Tron, Boss DD-6 (don't have one yet, but i've been wanting a good delay for a while now) and Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde OD (don't have it yet, but it's an awesome OD/Distortion box for guitar)

eeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwww!!!! i thought that was THE WORST wah id ever heard and the fuzz just made it sound like u had dieing batteries... but hey if thats what ur goin for by all means go for it. id personally much rather use a dunlop and a muff.

im absolutely in love with the moogerfooger.... to bad its like $400+ but most synth wahs or envolope filter are cool with me. whether its for bass or guitar. but im a sucker for all things wah really. phasers too.... really anything trippy or funky sounding

ah that reminds me!

how could i forget my EXH Bass Micro Synth. such a cool little box, but i haven't found a practical use for it yet.

if it had true bypass, i'd force myself to use it more.

Are you kidding? Maybe it was a bad pedal or something? That is a better wah sound than the dunlop. Srsly?

Seems like what I'm hearing is that there are lots of cool boxes, but their practical use is pretty limited :p

Actually the only thing I've really used regularly is a flange/chorus. A little flange into a spring reverb really warms up the sound, at least in small venues.

i like a couple of pedals like this.. amp> eq boost> bluesbreaker overdrive> octave> bass

the eq boost is a throback handmade pedal, it rocks, it makes the blues breaker whic hgives me a slight overdrive roar! makes it cut through and growl.. then octave makes it rattle.

i cant find an overdrive pedal that sounds good my itself
