So all the kids with their muddy paws
painted patterns on the lawn
It was a pink and gold crime scene:
Knees trembling with laughter, the milk of our lungs
Oh, and it flowed with equal parts honey, daylight, and love
All the flowers of our bodies! The rings around the sun!
And then the stars began to burn the black
And everything glowed like a movie scene
In a single flash of light
All their eyes overflowed
with a beauty so unimaginable
That had taken control of the skies
My face cracked into smiles
when I realized how sorely I'd been wrong
In assuming there could ever be
any emptiness without form
So I just gazed at the lightswitch
Until understanding that "on" really meant "off"
And if you measure a soul by what you own
Then you've got nothing at all
So we built memorials with our hands
and set fire to the calloused flags
That they'll cover our coffins with.
In the perfect lightness of everything,
you burst into song like piano keys
Singing, "I will remember this!"
So become what you love
and you'll become a part of everything
Without ever looking back
Until that day you awake to the newborn world you had dreamt about
When you were young and the stars burned the black.
