just wondering how long it would take to learn to scream / roar like the neurosis + isis vocalists?

my band has a gig in 2 and a half months , all the music is done + now we're focusing on vocals and one of the guys is stepping up to do a bit of roaring for us, just wondering if its possible to nail it by then?

if anyone could shed some light on it i'd be grateful!!

peace

ps. no "omg roaring is sux, sing properz"

first of all, for this type of screaming, it helps to have a lower voice (i.e. bass, baritone), which the vocalist(s) from those bands have. That's not saying you can't do this with a higher voice, it will just be a little harder.

Its hard to describe how exactly to do it, but it's very similar to a standard metal or hardcore scream, just with a darker tone. I suggest learning how to rasp first and then alter the tone of that to what you want by the way you shape your mouth. This kind of scream requires a tremendous amount of breath support as well, because you're trying to push as much air past the chords as you can. If you don't use proper breath support you run a greater risk of damaging your voice because it puts more strain on your neck.

I'm gonna step down for people like merkaba who are better at explaining this, and fyi there's a stickied thread for these types of questions.

you need to try and hit the specific low note
you need to breathe to the roof of your mouth and above the teeth
work on getting the muddy sound by closing your mouth and opening your throat more and more (both) when going lower
push from your gut
support it with a push similar to that of going to the bathroom, so to relieve tension on your throat
