I'm looking for documentaries not about metal as such, but about the controversies surrounding it and it's subgenres.
I hired out Paradise Lost which i will watch later. I don't believe it's about metal per se, but it is about people singled out for being different and being persecuted for their tastes in music.

Vh1 had one called "A Headbangers Journey" or something along those lines. It had some of the controversy surrounding black metal, the violence it supposedly provokes and some others concerns. I didn't think that is was that good but you could still watch it if it was actually released. It was very general though.

i saw that, it had some cool stuff in it, but focused a bit too much on hair metal, which doesn't qualifty to me.

I really like that DVD A Head Bangers Journey, but I still wonder why Bathory wasn't mentioned...

You are thinking of a different one called the Decline of Western Civilaztion, maybe?
Headbangers Journey doesn't talk about hair metal that much.

Isn't the Decline of Western Civilisation a punk documentary?
I watched a program called Death Metal Murders once. I think it was stupid, but I can't quite recall. It was only a stupid tv one off show though

I just watched the rest of True Norweigan Black Metal yesterday, Gaahl is an interesting character. Has a great speaking voice...

Yeah I think that might have been it. I think I saw the other one too, but was bothered that they didn't talk about current bands enough.

I saw A Headbanger's Journey last night, I was surprised at how it actually covered metal as a whole and not just the more mainstream forms of it..though it did focus a little too much on glam and hair metal, but that was expected haha

I just finished watching that.
What struck me as most interesting was the pastoral landscapes and the isolation of the countryside in Norway. It's a very darkly beautiful place. Black Metal has always seemed such a man-made concept outside of nature to me, but i think i understand now that nature and spirituality of the Norwegian landscape tie very strongly into it's essence.
The story of how he was one of the two boys going to a school in the isolated district he grew up in until he was 18, and the other guy killed himself only gives a hint of how alienating it must of been.

OMG, Trev, you brought the Jesus/Banana avatar back. :D
A headbanger's Journey is pretty cool.
I'm no fan of glam and hairmetal, but the part about Twisted Sister is great.
I should buy that movie if I see it for a decent price.

I remember reading about his recent assault case where someone broke into his house and he beat the guy like hell, and after seeing where Gaahl lives I understand that a lot more. If it had been in a city or suburbs, wow someone broke into your house... but when his house is the only one for miles and miles, there was obviously some foul intent and the man deserved to receive Gaahl's treatment.
