View Full Version : As of now, which Democrat do you want to see get nominated?

(Or Republican, for the 3 Republican-leaning MXers. Or both, if you like politicians on both sides)

We've had time to get to know the candidates a little better, Joe Biden thinks Obama's the first clean black guy in Washington, John Edwards continues to try to run to the left of everyone short of Dennis Kucinich, while even more is coming out about his malleability and dullness (http://www.tnr.com/doc.mhtml?i=w070521&s=crowley052307), and Mike Gravel is insane.

So, at this point, if I'm hoping for a Democrat that I think will do a good job, I'm hoping for Richardson first and Obama second. Then Clinton, then Edwards. If I'm hoping for someone who will get his butt kicked by a Republican, and excluding the aforementioned nutty Gravel, then I hope for Edwards.

On the Republican side, my personal favorite remains Huckabee, who I think is genuinely a nice and competent person. Plus I think he'd win a general election :p Second is Mitt Romney, who has demonstrated a great deal of competence, and third is Sam Brownback.

After that it gets sketchy. I'd vote for Guiliani over Clinton, but probably not over Obama.

I have yet to see one I would like to be a candidate on either side

Slim pickings in '08 methinks

John Edwards is completely out of the question, I have yet to figure out how my state keeps voting for him

Much like Howard Dean did in 04, he's giving a message that goes over well in the lead up to the primary. But when it comes time for the actual primary, a lot of people will drop him for Obama. I think Obama will come very close to or even win Iowa, which will instantly kill John Edwards' 08 hopes.

Obama. The only thing he has against him is inexperience in the political arena, but he appears to be a thoroughly competent human being and I can't imagine this translates to incompetency with leadership. Certainly not on the scale of Bush.

I like Edwards in an underdog kind of way but he's never captured my interest to the degree Obama has.

I don't want to see Hillary win the nomination. If she gets it there will be an immediate drop in liklihood that the Dems will capture the presidency...too many people are opposed to her outright, and with her, it's a personal dislike more than a political one, which is probably more dangerous.

Mitt Romney is the one I want. I've briefly heard a few reports on Huckabee...I don't know his stance on a lot of key issues, but most of what I've heard is that he's a strong-stanced guy who has a personality that everyone can relate to...or something like that. One of my best friends is working on the Guiliani campaign, and I wouldn't mind him either...

Because america as a whole elect the president with the most pleasing personality, regardless of their views. And Obama is probably the most charismatic politician since Bill Clinton.
So if he was nominated, a democrat might actually have a chance to win the election

Edit:

Same reason people liked JFK I imagine.

I like Kucinich, but he'll never get nominated.

Other than him, I'd go with Obama. He doesn't have much experience, but that's kind of what I like about him. He hasn't been playing the Washington politics for as long as the other people.

I met him once. He's just a genuine nice guy, as opposed to most politicians who are slimey.
I don't agree on all his positions... maybe half... but I'd rather see him than someone like Hillary, who is just typical Washington scum.

That's pretty much the same deal with me. He came to my high school in 2004 and I got to meet him and talk to him a bit afterwards.

He's a little too left for me on a lot of issues, but at least I know he'll stick with what he says he's going to do.

how can he stick with what he says he's going to do when his politics are so left-wing that no republican politician will ever willingly collaborate with him

politics aren't one-sided you have to have the support of both parties to be an effective leader

What I meant by it is he has his ideas, and he sticks to them instead of pandering to what everyone else in Washington wants.

that pretty much summarizes the entire democratic ballot as of right now

everyone running for president has their ideas and sticks to them but that doesn't mean their ideas are good ones

Obama should work out pretty well from what I know about him (not much). Otherwise I don't like either party so I don't really care. Alaska = 2 votes to the republican candidate regardless of who is running.

Ron Paul (since I can finally vote this election)

But Obama's sort of mesmerizing. If I decide to become an uncloseted liberal or if he's more clear about his policies he might get my vote.

I don't see giulani or mccain winning against any democrat in the race because of their war stance. Giulani also was not quite so revered until after 9/11 and has a reputation for being a very difficult person to deal with
