View Full Version : Skye Sweetnam, what genre fits her?
Yesterday I submitted Skye Sweetnam as an artist. I chose pop-punk as the genre, however it was recently changed to only pop. I think that's very incorrect since we are not talking about someone like Kylie Minouge or Britney Spears.
I wanted to consult it here, to avoid starting a war between users changing the genre of the artist.

It's pop. Having a pseudo-punk sense of fashion does not mean the album reflects anything punk.
I saw her at a punk show when Billy S was first entering rotation on radio/tv. She was plugging your ears.
That's so unpunk, she wasn't even up front.

Exactly what Cocaine said. Pop. Nothing else could really fit.
Then according to you, what bands are pop-punk?

Pop covers a wide array of artists, it's not a synonym for "manufactured for mainstream radio". Labeling an artist "pop-punk" doesn't make them any more punk, credible, or somehow have more substance than just pop...

Yeah, pop-punkers are just not into making their own stickers and patches and I think they actually shower.
Yeah, pop.
An artist being mainstream, it's up to the general audience to decide (or accept). Artist's credibility is mostly a personal decision. I'm talking about the kind of music that you can expect from the artist.
If were are going to be purists, then the idea itself of pop-punk is impossible. But ignoring that, if Simple Plan, Sum 41 and others are not pop-punk, then there is no artist that fits that genre then.
If you buy a JoJo record, you can expect pop, regardless of the credibility, honesty and integrity of the artist. If you buy a Skye Sweetnam record, you can expect pop-punk, regardless of the credibility, honesty and integrity of the artist.

Butch Walker is under pop, and he sounds more rock oriented. Why? Because he's a pop singer with a guitar. It doesn't matter the attitude the music reflects, it's how it sounds. Go listen to Regina Spektor; we could put her under indie because she follows a similar pattern of pianos and acoustic guitars but she's under pop because she most certainly follows a pop formula and sings as such. Pop-punk is possible, and the likes of Simple Plan and Sum 41 fall into this category. Taking punk music and adding pop isn't impossible, even as purists. Sum 41 doesn't fall into a "punk" category or "pop." There's a place in the middle for a reason.
Skye Sweetnam may have a faux-"punk" attitude, but that does not make her pop-punk. Categories aren't picked on attitudes alone, and her music is relatively far away from the sound of other pop-punk artists, which is even further away from the sound of punk artists. You seem to be undermining the genre "pop" and the credibility of those in it without a good reason. Their credibility has nothing to do with it, especially not their honest or integrity, whatever that means here. What we expect from Skye Sweetnam is pop music, a genre that is very much widely received and appreciated.
First I want to say that I have nothing against pop and I never said that pop artists have dubious or no credibility, integrity, etc. To me Simple Plan sounds as childish and as faux-punk as Skye Sweetnam and even then Lily Allen, a pop singer, has the most punkie attitude of those three.
Anyway, if you want to keep Skye Sweetnam as pop, that's ok, really.

Attitude isn't music though.

I don't actually think he's actually reading our responses thoroughly.
I'm not talking about attitude, I thought I made it clear with the Lily Allen comment, I'm referring purely to the music style. My point is that when I listen to this artist, I hear pop-punk, very girl, with lots of pop arrangements, but pop-punk either way.
I don't actually think he's actually reading our responses thoroughly.
That's really offensive, I'm reading all posts carefully and respectfully.
I think I've been respectful to everyone that has replied to this thread, and I also said that it was fine to keep the artist under the pop genre. Actually I never pay attention to the whole genre thing, but since I submitted this artist I was wondering and thought it would be polite to ask first.

I don't hear any punk in her music. That's pretty much my reason for saying it's pop.

That's mine too. Maybe because there isn't any.

They could probably be in pop too.

Simple-Plan is pop rock. Skye is pop as well, just as Hilary Duff or Ashlee Simpson are pop. They have a faux-edge to them to attract rebellious girls to their music, and thats that. It's rather forgettable at that.
OK, be it pop then.
Thanks to everyone for their comments.
