View Full Version : Ska and Pop Punk. And Zebrahead.

Well this is my first ever thread in the Sputnik forums. I've been reading the forums and random reviews for pretty much the last year and have finally decided to join the community, now that I recognise a nice list of names and actually have a grip on what kinds of music I like.
Anyways, this is a thread about Ska music with pop and punk influences, or punk pop punk with ska influences. It's kinda meant to be a way for me to figure out what new albums I should get and to discuss them and get me introduced to the boards I guess. Yup.
I listen to Less Than Jake's "In With the Out Crowd", "Anthem" and "Hello Rockview" and am not sure if I'd like their other albums. I have an extremely open mind when it comes to music, pop, punk, ska, numetal, Zebrahead. I Love Zebrahead, all of their albums except I've never heard The Yellow.
So, any ideas about what other ska(ish?) music I should check out? I'm getting bored with trying to find my own route through music, and am failing miserably. I can't stand straight up mainstream music, such as Fall Out Boy. I like other elements to be in the music, maybe not the center of it though, although I can definately deal with full-blown Ska (except their's something about Sublime I don't really like, but I havn't heard much from them)

And to be honest, you made a massive post, and I dunno' what it was even about lmao.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!
WELCOME TO THE FORUMS! :):):)

Yah. I didn't really know what I wanted to say while I was typing it. Just wanted to hear some names of some new bands to look into. :P
Anyways, thanks guys!

Streetlight is amazingly fun. Way better than catch22
Also, the flatliners will rip your face off. More punk/ska then pop-punk/ska, but they hit the spot. Even though I hate punk, I still dig.

Gimp was great pop-punk (with a little ska influence) band. They only had one album, though. It's from when Tom Kalnoky (singer/guitarist in Catch 22 and Streetlight Manifesto) was 15. If you want their album, I'll upload it for you.

Yah man, upload that. That'd be great. I'ma be trying to get all this music XD. Listening to Streetlight Manifesto right now.

Spunge
This band is so good. From the UK. Ska with pop punk influences.

I've always been almost afraid to get into Zebrahead. I mean, telling someone you like Zebrahead will have the same kind of effect if you told someone you liked Blink 182 if you guys know what I mean. Of course I would never stop liking a band because of other ppl (that's why I still like blink) but that's pretty much why I've never gottan into Zebrahead. Anyway, I was listening to some of their stuff about a week ago and it's extremely catchy. So I guess that means I'm gunna start listening to more Zebrahead - they're a really fun band. I don't really care anymore if other ppl think I'm like an amteur in music or w/e just because I listen to "childish" pop-punk bands.
- sorry, I know that was semi-off topic but I just had to get that out.
CapDown
Sonic Boom Six
The King Blues
Adequate 7
Captain Everything
King Prawn
Lightyear
No Comply
UK Ska(ish) Scene ftw.
Zebrahead are a great band, they were way better with the original lineup though. [spunge] are wicked, try Farse too for that kinda thing.
Streetlight Manifesto & Catch 22 go without saying, Big D & The Kids Table, (older) Aquabats, Five Iron Frenzy, (older) Goldfinger (Open Your Eyes and Hang Ups), Mad Caddies, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Operation Ivy, The Pietasters, RX Bandits, Suicide Machines, VooDoo Glow Skulls...
Just for starters. I've underlined ones you should DEFINITELY check out. Not all these bands are total Ska, some of them barely if at all, but they go with the same scene I think.
As for Sublime... ;_; one of my favouritest bands ever. Give either their Self Titled or "40oz To Freedom" a listen; best songs include:
What I Got
Wrong Way
Badfish
Santeria
Date Rape
Doin' Time
Smoke Two Joints
40oz To Freedom
April 29th 1992
Garden Grove
...if you want to get into them.
Most of this is the mainstream end, and a great place to start. If you want older ska (1st, 2nd wave), I can rabbit on about that all week...
DO check out the Aggrolites though. Love 'em!
Good luck :)

ska sucks.

Yeah mostly it does suck. Save for Big D, Streetlight and this Spunge band.

and when combined with pop-punk it's even worse.

you suck
hey, you're not cory!

Oh man, you gotta gotta gotta get Less Than Jake's Losing Streak. It is by far their best album.
KrisGodly
05-22-2007, 10:35 AM
Wow. I should've started asking around for music along time ago, so much easier than going out and looknig myself. lol.
As for Zebrahead, I know what you mean about not really liking to tell people that you care for'em. But I don't really care. I like Pop Punk, it's more fun, and I listen to fun music. I don't really care for metal because it's just... not fun, creative and skillfull as **** but not fun to listen to I think.
Zebrahead:
Waste of Mind - Zebraheads most Ska Album
Playmate of The Year - Has it's Ska areas, but mostly Pop Punk
MFZB - Has a song that almost shows Ska Influence, but is Pop Punk
Broadcast to the World - All Pop Punk.
I listen to anything, I don't care about it's genre so much, just like fun and energetic listens. Party music.
But I also enjoy harder music and numetal
:thumb:
I gots so much to start looking into... ugh..
..  ...
You know what's stupid? When someone goes to a thread and states something like "Ska Sucks." It's annoying as hell. It aint your genre, so get out.
Thank you kindly.
:chug:
And I think I did try looking into Losing Streak by streamign some of it, don't remember from where though. But when I tried to get it, all I could find was their newer stuff... But I love pop punk anyways, so whateva.

Farse
Whoa, these guys are pretty sweet. The vast majority of the bands you listed were too punk for my tastes, but I dig these dudes.
And I'd like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones if it weren't for the 80-year-old-sounding vocalist.
KrisGodly
05-23-2007, 10:21 AM
Yah. My main problem with most of what I'm hearing is the vocals. Havn't checked into much yet though. Streetlight Manifesto's pretty cool.

Check out The Matches' first release, E. Von Dahl Killed the Locals. If you're daring check out their new cd, Decomposer. It's nothing like EVDKtL, but it's really good.

Mustard Plug is from Grand Rapids I know them very well.
I've been listening to just ska for the best 3 weeks. Big D and the Kids Table is at the top of my list (not counting Streetlight).

It's not better than Hello Rockview. History of a boring town and Scott Farcas takes it on the chin are out of this world. I got 6 of their albums, still have to buy Pezcore, as for the grease album, well just stay away.
To the poster above I saw capdown supporting LTJ and they were truly crap. Haven't listened to them since then
