Really nice tone man! Emphasized by the light touch approach you took for the intro. Jam part kicks in beautifully! Wasn't too sure about the tapping bit, but overall this is far and away my favourite song by you! Great job!

supernaut
Well produced, epic stuff. Not my thing, but still well done.

Rollo
Took a while for it to get into some kinda of structure, I like it from 1:40 though - makes the build up worthwhile.

treize
Fun and interesting stuff! Flowed really well. AWesome.

Benjammin
Beginning sounds like you're tryin to communicate with whales! Still cool though. Man, you're songs come out really well! The droning synth or whatever that is makes the song. No clear structure, but it doesn't seem to need it.

Tough decision, but I'm voting for SixnStones.

Hmmm, that was a rather tough choice, for me it was between SixnStones' and Sheephead's... i've had to go back and listen to both to decide, heh. After much deliberation though, my vote goes to SixnStones, I can't explain why, it just appealed to me more I guess.

The others were great too... supernaut's was very interesting, and I certainly enjoyed the song.

But yeah, tough competition, they were all very good.

Wow, lot of entries this time.

Six - Nice drums. I love your tone. The song overall is really pretty. I would have liked to hear more melody in the first half. The melody in the second half was really nice though. I really liked this piece.

Dylan - You know I'm a fan of your music. This piece was cool, but I would love to see you branch off from the "electronic ambient music under history soundbytes" thing. Still, not bad at all. Good production, as usual. Cool piano break.

Rollo - I like your tone, and your playing style. But so much of it was just too ambient. When you put a melody on top it was really beautiful, I just wish that that melody had been present all the way through.

Treize - Wow, definitely a surprise. I didn't really know your music, so this was really cool to hear. Awesome little melody. Really cool feel to the song. My biggest complaint is it is quite repetitive.

Benji - That intro note makes my ears cry. You know how I feel about looped music, but you do it about as well as it can be done. You brought out some nice melodic ideas in this song.

Sheephead - Classic you. You've easily got some of the best chops on here, as well as an ear for melody. Nice theme to this song. I love the whole feel to the song. Very good work.

All the entries were very good, but Sheephead's really stood out to me.

Rabi, I question the attention you give to the music. There was no looping in that song, you nub. :p

They were all really good. Nice job guys, you made it hard to choose. Couple quick thoughts

Ben- For me at least, it took too long for the actually music to come. I like all the ambient stuff you do but i dont think it should last that long. Felt like a 1 minute 30 second intro. The rest of the song was great though

Six- Really enjoyed it, thought the drums worked great

Sheep- Ended up going with this one because it kept me the most interested as well as many other things. awesome job

Different method, same effect. Too ambient for my tastes.

Thanks guys! Muchos gracias!

We need A LOT more people voting! I think mods should ban non-voters. THEN we'd get sufficient numbers! What? Too harsh? Tyranny? Psh!

SixnStones - Sorry man, but it just didn't keep my attention. I barely listened to any of it. Apologies.

Naut - Cool stuff. Really enjoyed this one. Not the most original song out there, and not particularly bass driven, but very well composed, and great production.

treize - Pretty repetetive. Sounded just a bit too 'thick' too me. A little crowded in terms of chord voicings, I thought.

Ben - I liked the intro, but was waiting for some sort of song..... just didn't seem to ever get there.

Sheephead - Well composed. Very Wooten-esque, I though. That said, I thought the playing was a tad rough.

My vote - Supernaut.

Didn't mean any offense to anyone, I just typed my thoughts as I listened.

good stuff all around, no doubt; but it came down to Rollo and Ben for me. i guess i just liked the vibe coming from those two the most. i don't know...Rollo's was a little rough, and i REALLY wish the recording quality was better, but the tune itself was very nice. Ben's was just cool. period. very interesting to listen to.

**** it i'm just gonna flip a coin, both were really nice.

For me was between Sheephead and Tr3ize. I said Tr3ize was gonna win, right when i heard his piece, and it's awesome. But Planet Bubble was the shiz asa well... In the end i just went with Tr3ize cuz it was more fun (for me).

Cheers for the comments y'all.

Six-I couldn't really get into the beginning, the next part made up for it, but I wasn't very intersting in the ending. I still thought it was pretty good though.

Naut-I really liked this, with the voice, and the backround music, like the little breaks without talking too. Great Work, really enjoyed it!

Rollo-Too slow at the beginning, I found that kind of ruined the rest.

Treize-I really enjoyed this peice, nice and jumpy, great work!

Ben-You know I'm a big fan of ambience, and especially your music, but this wasn't my favorite song of yours.

Sheep-Very interesting, good the entire way through, really enjoyed it, and I really like your tone.

My vote goes to Sheep!

Whoa, too bad I wasn't there. Wasn't it usually like Ck and Havic who would win?

Surprisingly Havic's never won one of these, an injustice if ever I saw one! They were never quite that high scoring, maybe high teens early twenties. Would be ace to get back to that! wink wink.

Sixnstones: As people have said, beautiful tone, I like the double thumbed passages and progression. I liked the way the song progressed and the little Norwegian Wood quote was fun. Best track I have heard from you. Good stuff.

Dylan: I'm liking the ambience you are creating, the production is very good and the grooves and progression I really like. Great track.

Rollo: I really like this, beautiful melodic tapping with some nice Manringesque passages. The second section is gorgeous, if you can get a better recording sound this would be absolutely amazing.

Tr3ize: This immediately put a smile on my face. :) It sounds like it would make a great tv theme for something. Great tone, grooves, chords and melodies but got a bit repetitive nearer the end. Great track though.

Ben: Spooky intro, me likey. You do some amazing ambient music, I love your use of the e-bow on this track. It makes great background music to chill to but I think you should perhaps try and create some music with a more defined structure, it would be interesting to hear what you could come up with. I do like this track though.

Matt: Nice, I like the development of the melody and chords, I just wish you had better recording quality, it is a nice piece but the recording quality just doesn't do it justice and I feel the ending could do with some more development but overall good stuff.

Right this is tricky... I'll go for Rollo on this one, excellent stuff!

It was between Ben, Treize, and Sheephead.

Sheep, part of it totally sounded like Sex In A Pan.

I really liked Treize's song, it was so much fun.

I liked Ben's song the most. The others weren't far behind.

I can see why this is League 1. Good job, people in League 1.

Something just really reminded me of Sex In A Pan.

Everyone really put up impressive pieces. I've been debating on who to vote for between rollo and sheephead for the last 2 days :p. Both amazing solo pieces. It seemes pretty rediculously unfair that rollo has 2 votes, but I'm goin with Sheep. Great melodies, great use of harmonics.
Great stuff all around though really. Well it is league 1. From watching these it seems people tend to weigh production a little too much over talent and songwriting.

I'll hold my hands up and say that I spend about 10-20mins when recording a track, whilst I'm pretty sure guys such as Wintermute, Coffee, Benjammin, etc spend hours, days, or more slaving over the finest details. If it shows in their recording I think it's only fair to reward them, I mean in my opinion it can sometimes make or break a track. I know it's certainly 'broken' a few of mine!

I record in 1-2 hours, usually. Any longer, and I tend to lose interest. A huge chunk of most of my songs is usually improvised, so that cuts down on the recording time. :p

^I make up the song as i go along and record it in 110 seconds, which is shorter than the track itself, so do i win?

EDIT: it doesn't matter how long it takes, it's jst the end product

well what i actually meant is, it's not a contest who's shorter it took to record it, i meant, doesnt really matter winning or losing since i didn't put much time/effort in it.

*writing each after ive heard each one*

Stones: i thought that was excellent - the whole thing was extremely well put together and there was some real meaning in each part.

Naut: once again, great stuff. the whole electronica thing is right up my alley. not so much bass, but the malcolm x makes up for it.

Rollo: fantastic tapping piece. the chording was particularily effective for me, and the second track of harmonics and such complemented the melody very well.

Treize: uplifting piece, made me smile right away. middle strumming section was an effective contrast to the rest of the tune.

Ben: Ambitious use of feedback and suchlike, used effectively so as to create a fitting backdrop to the melody

sheephead: another one for smiling. superb tune, classic wooten-style. i always love those snaps keeping the beat.

well i actually couldnt choose against any of these because they were all so good. so i decided to have a big tournament of coin-flipping.

the final was supernaut, rollo and sheephead...

supernaut: 2 ; rollo: 1 ; sheephead: 0

thats the way the coin flipped.

naut gets my vote

Could you elaborate on this? :/

Well I mean what I said really, just seems people go by the overall sound of the recording a little too much, rather then the musicians creative and artistic way of utilizing the bass guitar to express themselves and just be creative. I have no production experience, and can't really afford a good program right now to record with, and then mess around with the sound. If I make a piece for this it would be one track of bass lined-in to the comp and it would sound pretty crappy tonewise, and therefore I would have a huge disadvantage compared to the others who do the same thing, but can tweak their sound to perfection and add different effects and samples. I know that that is an art in itself and takes talent, but too me its not what this competition should be about as much. I just think it should be a bit more about the notes and structure of what your playing then the sound/production, because its a bass competition really. When I pick the winner I go by who was the most creative overall, but with the bass weighed more then the other factors, and who I thought was the better bassist overall in their piece.
Look at the winning piece, supernaut took samples and put them together to create an amazing piece of music, but I can't really vote for that when im voting the bassforums league 1 champ. I guess there isn't any specifications on the piece to be submitted soo maybe (probably) I'm just completely wrong, but im fine with that, its just my oppinion.
I really loved your piece by the way, you really created a certain atmosphere and played off of it well. Verrry nice harmonization as well. Didn't use too much delay, but when you used it, it sounded great. I thought it maybe coulda built up a bit more to the end and climaxed or something, but maybe that just wasn't what you were going for. Great work. :thumb: You see I just couldn't create a song like that because I don't have the tools necessary, maybe I'm just a little bitter because of that. iI wish I could explain what I mean a little better :p

naut

Look at the winning piece, supernaut took samples

well, no...all the bass, synth, piano, etc was composed and played by me. they aren't samples. the only thing i can't take credit for are the drums. while i did arrange them, i did not program them. they're just loops from GarageBand; but hey i don't have a program in which i can do that.

regardless, i am however very surprised that out of the two comps i've entered, this song won. basically because it is a bass competition. i mean, obviously there's bass in it, but the other song i entered before, (Tragic Flaw), is all bass.

Congrats Mr. Naut!

thank you sir.

Ahh my bad, I really shouldn't have assumed they were samples. I just know 2guys that sort of make that kind of music and they use all samples. Plus it sounded so clean and stuff.
