View Full Version : I think I found my new favourite strings.

After about three and a half years of refusing to play GHS strings, I really think I found some I like; in fact not only like but soon to be my favourite strings.
Lately I've been tired of the bright and trebly sound coming from my bass. I like the the way the highs just tend to sing with a bass setup that typically goes for the lowend. Contrary to this, before my whole thing was "punch". I wanted the sound to make you feel like you should be doubled over when you hear the bass. DR Lo-Riders and Fatbeams were my choice of string for this. Now I've moved on to something totally different: GHS Nylon Tapewounds. They feel great, and sound awesome. I even dig the slap sound I get out of them. (Not to mention they look cool.)
Anyone else have any experience with nylon strings, or with just going for a different sound all together?

I've been meaning to test a set of tapewounds for ages and they would look amazing on my current bass, can you describe the tone a little more?

I think Ryan (Funkeyhoney) uses nylons on one of his basses. I'd be interested in trying them out sometime. What sort of sound do you find they get?

I used some shitty fender tape wounds on my fretless once and if i would slide to fast it would give me a burn that felt like rope burn. But they did sound pretty good.

The low end is LOW. Really low. It lacks a bit of definition in that spectrum, but it accentuates the tone all that much more. The case describes them as having an upright tone, and in the lower register is where it really does. It isn't that organic type of woody tone, just sort of vintage. The middle and high end tonal range is where I really think these shine. There isn't really any bite on them, and everything is pretty even dynamically. You can expect to have pretty smooth tones all over the fretboard, and you can get that on the 24th fret of the G string without sounding harsh at all. The slap tone is different, it's sort of like your slapping a pseudo fretless. It doesn't really convince you that it's fretted or fretless, it just sort of has that droll. That's definitely not for everybody. Tapping on them has been pretty fun, they respond really quickly, and you don't get any of that crappy string noise if you suck at tapping, which I like a lot.
They don't give me that burn feeling at all. Compared to regular flats these are MUCH better for that. The nylon coating does nothing to my fingers at all.
For about $26 USD, I recommend you try them. Just note that I hade some trouble getting the nylon winding part through the bridge and my tuners. These strings do not come in any gauge that could be considered remotely small, even then, you hardly notice.

I might try these out, but first I am getting a set of piccolo strings to try.

I dig the Fender ones. Had them on a fretted bass for a long time, really dug the tone.

i use nylon coated rounds of my old fretless, but right now they're sitting in a drawer as i gave that bass to my brother and wanted the strings

I recently strung up my four string with a set of TI Flats an absolutely incredible sound. Very retro -lots of thump. Too bad I don't have a need to play my four anymore.

I'd be really curious to hear how tryxx's nylons sound compared to the TI JF's. After the first time I tried the TI's I've never used anything else on fretless.

If I had any way to make a quality recording, I'd be happy to oblige. Also, since my only electric four string bass is my OLP, it wouldn't doesn't record well anyway.

Go to http://www.bassplayer.tv and check out Artist Interviews: Bobby Vega. He's a silly little bald man who looks something like Mario. Anyway, he's talking about Larry Graham and how he emulates his tone using tapewounds. I think it gives a pretty good example of the variety of tones you can get from nylons.
