My bassist is buying an amp soon. We always used to play in a studio but now we will be playing at my drummers place. The room is like 2.5 metres by 3 metres.

So we got:
A drum set
2 guitars and 2 guitar amps (10w and 15w. Yeah i know it isnt much but we got to travel to our friends place with those amps.)
A mic

So what kind of bass amp should he buy? He will have to carry it every week to our drummers place, so i think it should be rather a small one. But what wattage will be fine? We play with lots of distortion.

I'd go for something like a Roland Cube. I don't particularly like the Fenders(SWR), Hartkes, and Berhingers, that are suggested for around that size amp, and I think a Peavy would probably be too heavy.

That's a small room man!

If you are going to play out and want the bass to have any presence, you probably need about 300 watts and at least a 1x15 cabinet.

Fender Rumble is pretty good. It has a pretty small footprint, not too deep.

Edit: two small guitar amps wont be hard to compete with. I'd get a 1x15 of some sort. At least a 1x12.

300? I beleive you are over estimating a little.

If you're a pretty quiet, chill type band, I bet you could get away with a 50 watt combo.

But if you plan on rocking at all and your drummer is going to be hitting hard, then I'd go for 100 watts or more. Placement of the amp is pretty important for practices. It'll be easier to hear if you have it up closer towards ear level, or if you tilt it back.

what type of music do you guys play?

We play mostly metal stuff. Megadeth, Metallica, Machine Head and some recent metalcore bands. Our sound is more like Machine Head though.

How loudly do you guys practice? And is your drummer a hard hitter?

The guitars are at 5 to 7 on 10. And the drummer is a bit of a hard hitter. In the studio the bass is usually on 8 9 out of 10 on a rather big amp. Should be about 1 metre tall.

I'd say for metal, go for a 100 watt amp or larger. Also, what size of bass drum does your drummer have?

My drummer has a 26" and its tuned really low, so I have a lot to compete with. If your drummer has a similar set up then you'll need more power.

Would it sound terribly awful with a 50W amp?? With a 12 inch diameter speaker?

Not awful, just probably not loud at all.

How will this amp sound like?? The 30 W one. Its got one 10" speaker and the other 2 amps are both 6.5" 10W.

30 watt is'nt going to cut it...you'll need atleast 100.My player has a 30 watt and he cant even hear himself of me drumming and my guitar players 40 watt amp.
