That you're the best damn bassist ever! I'm sure there have been moments when we have all been cocky. This thread's dedicated to our bestest moments :thumb:.

I used to think I was hot sh*t, but really all I had was too much fingerstyle chops with an underdeveloped sense of phrasing and melody.

No, because I am too down on myself about my playing. People tell me that I am extremely good, but I refuse to admit to it.
i have moments where i become excited about something i've done, but the feeling dissipates rapidly.

yeah i'll throw up a recording on here when i think i've come up with something super sweet, and get responses that tell me otherwise.

The second I step on stage, I get that feeling. There's something about a crowd of people who came to watch you.

I'm freakin awesome because i can slap and pop octaves.
Nah, but seriously...I know i'm a fairly mediocre player by the standards on here, but playing in a punk band, if I stary playing anything other than root notes with a pick, I get people coming up afterwards saying how awesome I am. I'm such a fraud.

my bassist does the same thing. he can probably outplay all the bassist at my school.
here's a great story. my brother has been playing bass for two years now. around six months ago he brought a bass to a music reading class. then this one kid who thinks he's hot **** on any instrument goes up to him and asks if he can play the bass. he tries to play the intro for classical thump. then my brother said "wow... that's pretty good." then he played the intro cleaner and faster. the hot **** kid was left with an "o rly" face. :smash:
i just thought i post because it was a great bass memory.

Some days I'll just sit down with a guitarist or other musician and without exchanging any words play the best improvised music I've ever heard. Then some days everything I play sounds like crap to me and I can't even play in key rooting with a chord change sheet.

1) How do you know who the best is, you havn't heard everyone yet
2) Best is subjective and nothing more than a personal opinion
3) The definition of best also varies
4) Everyone is capable of doing things that no one else can
i have moments where i become excited about something i've done, but the feeling dissipates rapidly.
Yeah same here. At first its like nice and I get excited and I'm so proud of myself. And then I stop, and think...about what to do next. Hah!

Know how to wipe that "I'm awesome" feeling right off your/some other smug person's face? Put some sheet music in front of them.
that or i think about how i can't improvise, especially with other musicians.

Or put them in a session with nothing but chord charts, preferably jazz/bop. the faster the better.

I'm not trying to be Mr. Cynic, I'm trying to keep things real and down to Earth.
You can convince yourself that you're the "greatst" and boost your ego all you want, I could too if I wanted to, but tbqh it's really a total waste.
I'm honest with my playing. If I play something sloppily/screw up, I fix it, and move on. I don't convince myself it was great when I know it wasn't, because I wouldn't improve.
When you convince yourself you're the greatest, you lose the motivation to get better, and then what happens? Suddenly you're not so great.

I was about to come in this thread and post something similar to this.
If you think you are the best, there is no room to improve if you are already the best; therefore, you become lazy, practise less, do not learn anything new, then your playing is either constant or on a nice decline.
:amaze:
05-03-2007, 11:42 AM
you guys are taking it out of context. he didnt say "hey how many of you think you ar ethe best ever?" he wanted to hear about MOMENTS when you thought you did something damn cool.
:amaze:
nah, you're definately being mr cynic.
:amaze:
Like I said, there is a difference between being cynical and being honest.
Just because the things I'm telling you guys aren't what you want to hear doesn't make them any less valid of points.
That being said, as a musician you can continue to attempt to alter your own reality and boost your ego, but really you'll just end up hurting yourself and your playing. It's your choice, I don't really care, but just keep that in mind.

I understand your point Luke, but my point is that there's a difference between being content or happy with something you've done and being cocky and arrogant over something you've done.

And when did I say there was something wrong with being happy with what you've done?

Yeah, I understand, but I also just thought it was funny that you came into the thread posting that. I mean, I am down on my playing, so I could never possibly nominate myself with the BAMF award.
This should just be turned into the "Achievements You are Proud of Thread." :p

No-one ACTUALLY thinks they're the best bass player... At least they shouldn't. This thread is just about those moments where you go, "ohhhh right." That was funky. If you've never had that, unlucky.
i really think this is being taken far too sincerely.
"oh woohoo i accomplished something neat and feel great about it, thus defined by my boastful, yet playful, exaggerations."
...
"now son, you're not really the best bassist in the whole wide world, for the following reasons..."

stfu, someone's got to tell him he's not the best, EADG is jst taking it upon his shoulders to be that paternal figure.

No, Leroy Yeltsin

I'm really not trying to be paternal at all
I actually find children pretty annoying and don't really have that much desire to be a father.. but that's off topic
I was just contributing to the discussion, and my point was that musicians can't afford to get too full of themselves, due to the fact that their desire to practise and therefore skill level will suffer from it
Once again I never claimed that there was anything wrong with being proud of what you've done, or happy with what they've done, because there isn't. If you didn't get any enjoyment out of your music, you probably wouldn't play.
No, Leroy Yeltsin
Not familiar with that name..? Sounds Russian though?

indeed. if i ever "have" a kid, i'll just adopt a 17 year old. that way, he'll be gone in a year, and in the meantime he can score me some sweet high school pü-sayyy.:naughty:

Yeah, because I obviously do a lot of masturbating in my school's guidance office.
I was willing to have a mature discussion with you about this but if it's just turned to cheap shots and juvenile humour, I don't see much point.
