Student Arrested for Making a CS Map
Zips @ 11:37 am pdt - general - 7 comments
Another in a series of paranoia induced freak outs, comes the news that a student attending Clements High School in Fort Bend, Texas was arrested for making a Counter-Strike map based on his school. The map was intended for use solely amongst the creator and his friends, but was discovered by concerned parents who then contacted the authorities.

As a result of this, the student has been placed in an alternative education program and is not allowed to attend his graduation with his peers. The original article contains a bit more detail, but due to high traffic the site may not work when you click to read.

A follow-up article states that they found swords in the student's room, though it is reported these were purely decorative. In addition, the school administration placed this issue at a "Level 3" meaning that "a student engages in conduct relating to a false alarm or report (including a bomb threat) or a terroristic threat involving a public school." Police officials also forced the student to delete the map and uninstall Counter-Strike from his computer.

"They arrested him," Chen said of FBISD police, "and also went to the house to search." The Lin family consented to the search, and a hammer was found in the boy's room, which he used to fix his bed, because it wasn't in good shape, Chen said. He indicated police seized the hammer as a potential weapon.

"They decided he was a terroristic threat," said one source close to the district’s investigation.

This just goes to proof the the world will not be destroyed by nukes or whatever, but by anal-retentive mothers around the world.

Seriously, if you can't have anything in a room that can potentially be used as a weapon we might as well just start living in mepty, padded, spherical rooms.

what a sad state people have directed this country in

it snows, they dont call off school, a bus crashes, parents sue the school

the next time, they call off school at the hint of snowflakes, parents sue the school for them having to take off from work for no reason

its the ignorant, sue-happy parents of your generation that have made things how they are now

everyone is so scared of a lawsuit these days, we're damned if we do, damned if we dont

It's not like this is the first time a school has been used for a CS map. If the kid made the map after VT, then he's a complete moron, but this is still ridiculous.

I have a freind who made a cs map of my school as a joke. I have 2 friends with samurai swords....maybe they are a really small terrorist ring.

Once again this is appalling, what law has he broken any way, on what authority have the cops forced him to uninstall the game?

It's not so much the parents that make me wonder, it's the legal system. After all, it's the thing that allows bullshit lawsuits like that. It also makes me question the competence of judges who do cases like that.

If it were me, i'd fine them for wasting my time and drawing away my attention from cases that actually matter.

If you don't let kids release stress in ways like making CS maps of their school I think they're a hell of a lot more likely to shoot up a school.

Do you reckon we should have 'police or other authority figure unreasonably crack down based on generic misunderstanding' thread? All these threads bring up the same points.

I was actually discussing the other night about how our halls of residence would be ideal for urban warfare.

We were talking about its amazing potential for paintball, but I think we're an intolerable risk to the safety of others they way we come up with such potentially deadly ideas.

Airsoft's good because only people with better things to do than pretend they weren't hit play it

because full auto fire makes it a lot more tactical (they're probably not going to miss you on that rambo charge)

And because you can be all "look at me guys"

its ridiculous, and no, its not the first time its been said, im aware of that.

His school and the law are overreacting due to their ignorance of a computer game.

However, he really should know better. Fear and paranoia have not settled, but what could he have done? Should've just played dust2..its fun nonetheless.

Every time I think the American legal/justice system can't sink any lower I find a gaping hole in the floor.

When did Americans become such unbelievable pussies? If it weren't for the fact that I could never get through law school, I'd become a judge just so I could review cases like this and throw them out before the hour was up. But not before having the plaintiff's name legally changed to "Helpless McDipshit."

Because video games are tools of the devil that teach happy, innocent children how to kill and enjoy it using methods that the most brutal militaries in the world embrace to turn recruits into heartless killing machines.

The fact that you're playing good guys is irrelevant, because according to the police you still drink enough mercury every day to be able to recieve kill messages from your ever-wily computer and it's seductive digital entertainment/homicide training programs.
