View Full Version : Sharing Wireless Internet?

hi,
I pay for the internet in my house. I download movies, series, music all the time and I use the internet a lot.
My sister has a laptop and wants to use the internet on her laptop all the time too even though I pay for it. I'm not letting her because I think it will slow my internet speed down a lot and seeing as she doesn't pay for it she should not be allowed to do so.
I let her on my pc for an hour or two each day and if she wants to check e mails then she does.
I just let her check her e mails, then she started making fun of me nastily and slapped me. Then I told her that if she didn't like me then she can gtfo my room. She says that she is gonna get her boyfriend to give her a modem so she can use my internet.
What do you guys think I should do?
I would like to know how to set a password on my pc stopping it being accessed by her or anyone when im out. I was thinking of setting one in the BIOS?

Share it, it won't slow you down too much.

Set her laptop on fire.
EDIT: Relmar, if she downloads music, movies or anything like that it will slow him down terribly. I run wireless net here with three others and we always run our TV show downloads at night otherwise we're all at a snailpace.

kill her
or just use a standard windows user account password?
or take the main power cable with you whenever you go anywhere?
Relmar'd

Or just get Windows Vista. Nobody wants to use a computer with Windows Vista.

so, is she not willing to pay a bit towards it?
and is she going to be downloading too? because if it's just for web broswing/instant messaging/emails it shouldn't slow you down much at all

Downloading doesn't slow internet speed down. At least not considerably. What takes up the bandwidth and slows it down is uploading, you fools. Having more than one computer on an internet connection should not be a problem at all unless she's always sending/uploading files or torrents.

i just got wireless internets a week ago or so. setting it up was a bit of trial and error and i kept losing connection on my computers so i took down my software firewalls. i have one of those wireless "gateway" things so its said i don't need a software firewall anymore and chad told me the same but idk it seems weird. i still drop connection sometimes but it comes back a second later although i don't think its supposed to do that at all so i gotta look into it.
oh and yeah my download speed is slower for some reason then when i had just one computer connected with wires. idk why that is but it would seem to make sense.

you appear to have no idea what you are talking about.
sharing your internet will not be detrimental to your internet speed if all she is doing is browsing a few sites and reading emails
just share it

At my friends house we have 7 computers running off of one internet connections, all computers with heavy transfer at all times. It doesnt really slow down that bad, most of the time we notice it take a **** moreso during peak hours (3.30 till about 9pm) because thats when everyone around here is using it.
But Torrents do kill the connection so we only run them when no one is doing anything (Uploading kills more than downloading).
Downloading doesn't kill at all. If you've got your max torrent upload speed at like 5k/s it won't make any difference on the connection speed.

Based on experience I am calling your bluff.
Torrents kill our wireless network.
Okay well I use a wireful connection and downloading torrents doesn't do anything to internet speed or ping for online games. Uploading torrents kills it, yes, but like I said if you've got your max upload speed at a really low k/s, it shouldn't make that noticable a difference.

Downloading doesn't kill at all.omy what kind of magical bandwidth do you use in bizzaro world?
downloading is using bandwidth what are you talking about? where is this data coming from then? torrents only use the internet to upload? maybe you just download very poorly seeded torrents so it goes at 1kbs. in which case carry on yes you aren't using much bandwidth to dl.
if she is always downloading from decent servers/well sedded torrents it's the same thing.
Thats what I said but no one paid any attention.that's not what you said at all.
and jxd you has a hardware firewall which should be enough but if you configure the software ones it should work. ethernet is faster than wireless and sharing badwidth between the two pcs will make internets slower.

Be quiet nath, no one cares.
I'm on 0.5mb DSL and I've just shared it with my mum's new computer - doesn't slow me down at all.
However when I B-to-the-T or whatever it makes her speed go to hell.
Of course its pretty slow anyway but yeah.
Internet won't affect downloading, but downloading certainly affects internetting.

you can make your laptop password protected by going into the control panel > user accounts > change an existing account
and then just check to option to make it password protected. done

I'm sorry but I've always got torrents downloading at rather fast speeds and it has absolutely no effect on my browsing speed. And I download from good servers and well-seeded torrents, believe me.
I use an Ethernet connection so like I said that may be the difference, but all I know is that there is not any drop in speed when multiple computers are using connected to the internet. The only case when it does slow things down is when one computer is uploading at fast speeds.

so what you are telling me is this.
let's say you have 1Mb internets and you are downloading from a decent server which is using all of the available bandwidth to download.
so there you are sitting downloading at 100kBs when you decide to play some online game. and there you are running around chuting things with good ping! omyomy
you start another download and it too runs at 100kBs! at the same time! you now have 2Mb internets magically!
i like the internet protocols you have in bizzaro world. must be kl to be able to download as much as you like and use no bandwidth at all. so the packets of data just appear from nowhere on your pc. kl
downloading will kill your ping and other downloads. maybe you are too dumb to notice it while browsing but that's not what you said is it. let me quote again.
Downloading doesn't slow internet speed down. At least not considerably. What takes up the bandwidth and slows it down is uploading, you fools.downloading torrents doesn't do anything to internet speed or ping for online games.Downloading doesn't kill at all.downloading uses bandwidth.
end of story. i don't care what you have always got. you are talking bs or you are magical.

Guys. The internet isn't something you can just dump stuff on. It's not a big truck...Geeze.
My point is that if I'm downloading something, I don't notice any drop in speed. Is there technically a drop in speed? Maybe but it's negligent.
The Stig
05-01-2007, 02:40 PM
yeah gg old meme
Yeah gg you I'm slow at the internet because someone clogged my tubes. I think the 1's got stuck in a kink in a wire or something.
then your point is wrong. it's not negligible.
I think I would notice if there was a significant drop in speed. I've got up to four computers hooked up to the internet connection in this house, and even if one or more are downloading there is no noticeable or inconvenient drop in browsing speed.
your ping and downloads will die. if you don't notice then you are downloading at bad speeds anyway.
 Maybe you just have a lousy connection, bro. I download albums from Oink at blazing speeds and my browsing speed is just fine.
this has nothing to do with my connection. it's fine ty but this is not experience. you clearly have special circumstances. the rules the rest of the internet work on don't apply to you.
Well what the hell do you want me to say? I'm just talking from raw experience. All I know is that I can browse the internet on all four computers hooked up to this connection and download without suffering any blow to internet speed, whereas uploading completely kills it.

Back home, one computer doing anything will **** over the rest of 'em... (mainly that means everyone yelling at me). Here at school its ****ing umlimited. I've gotten torrents going at over *1Mb/s*, and still be able to play an online game with great ping... Ahhh... fiber optic connections are wonderful :)
