This Is England is a 2006 film written and directed by Shane Meadows. It is a drama centered on young skinheads in early-1980s England. The film highlights the irony that although the skinhead subculture was partly based on elements of black culture, (especially Jamaican ska and reggae music), a large faction of the subculture became hijacked by white power groups such as the National Front.[1] The story focusses on young Shaun, who following bullying at school, falls in with a bunch of likeable skinheads. The newfound freedom and social acceptance he finds is shortlived, and takes a much darker turn when National Front member Combo returns from jail and reasserts his leadership of the group. What follows is an often disturbing view of 1980s England and an intense look at a young boys descent into darkness ofset by the ramificatons of the Falklands War and the rise in nationalism.

The film was featured on the BBC's The Culture Show on April 7, 2007, in which British critic Mark Kermode travelled to the directors' home town and interviewed both Shane Meadows and the film's producer Mark Herbert.

What I've seen of it makes me want to see it. But I can never justify spending 6quid to go to the cinema, especially as I find it really hard to sit through films anyway. But yeah I wanna see it. Most of the people I know have said it was good.
