Ok. So, slightly inspired by Iscariots lottery in the GD, I thought a slightly more cerberal rep thread might be appropriate for the PNWI. So here's a quiz :)

Now, understand a few groundrules here. Don't go spamming answers. If you want to change what you put, tough luck. The first post I see is your answer, UNTIL I post that all answers up until that point are wrong. After that, you can take another stab at it. Dont post anything other then the answer (or rather, the attempt at it).
I will rep who ever wins (and hopeflly other participants will do the same).

So here it is, the question. I can't take credit for it, as it one that someone else gave to me a long long time ago, and I had to bust my *** off to find. Trust me, you will have earned you're rep if you answer this.

"What were the only 2 USAAF aeroplanes built during WWII that used French-made armaments?"
There are two possible answers, so there could be two possible winners...

Good Luck :)

My best guess is the Spitfire, but I know it is wrong

I would have to guess the P-51, best thing I can come up with off the top of my head.

Der Übermensch

The spitfire was british, and it ain't the P-51... This will take some looking...

I'll add a clue latter maybe.

Der Übermensch

Otherside, you are quite close. USAAF called it the A-20, which is slightly closer even :)

Martin A-22 Maryland?

Der Übermensch
04-27-2007, 11:24 AM
Close again... Attack aircraft are the way to go. It might also help to know that only a very small number of planes were built for one of the planes, and it never saw operational service.

A-35 Vengeance?

Der Übermensch
04-27-2007, 02:53 PM
Getting close...

The A-20 was still the closest guess (And I don't mean numerically...)

Look for irregular gun configurations... (These aren't .50's...)

GreyHam
04-27-2007, 02:59 PM
bollox thats my guess gone isnt it

what an irritating question (ive been looking all day instead of writing my essay... well done nobhead lol)

Der Übermensch
04-27-2007, 03:02 PM
you can keep guessing. You're only allowed one guess between my checking of the answers so far.
If I say you're wrong, you get another chance.

Der Übermensch
04-27-2007, 03:19 PM
Correct. The XA-38 was armed with a T15 75 cannon that was left over as surplus from WW2.

The A-20 was close... it didn't have French guns, but it was the plane that the A-38 was going to replace. However the A-38 used the same engine as the B-29, which took precedence.

(For the DB-73, notice non were actually built)
Now whats the other plane?

GreyHam
04-27-2007, 03:21 PM
the website says it does.... :-(

Der Übermensch

Way to defeat the point Knifeboy :(

And Greyham, if you can quote me the phrase, and I agree, you'll get credit. However, I don't believe the A-20 fits the bill.

GreyHam
04-27-2007, 03:28 PM
your right none were ever built....hoped that wouldnt matter :p

Nope. The second plane is in the "B" designations.

(also, only some were built with the French guns. An American version was also used)

Der Übermensch
04-27-2007, 03:40 PM
6 my time... that would be an hour and 1/2. The answer really isn't that hard since you know the first part.

The second is armed with a similar weapon (75mm cannon).

GreyHam

B25 mitchell

B-25G/H Mitchell: 75-mm

The B-25 Mitchell was an American medium bomber used both in Europe and the Pacific during World War II. In 1942, work began on modifying a B-25 to carry a new 75-mm M4 cannon, based on the French 75 used during World War I. This new aircraft was given the designation B-25G, and the design featured a number of modifications to the nose to carry the 75-mm cannon. The 9.5 ft (2.9 m) long cannon weighed 905 lb (410 kg) and was located in a cradle in the lower left-hand side of the nose, as pictured below. Located just above the cannon were two 0.50-inch caliber machine guns. Further modifications to the basic B-25 included addition of a spring mechanism and structural strengthening to handle the 21-inch recoil of the M4 cannon. The G model was also equipped with more extensive armor plating given its role as a ground attack and strafing platform.

Der Übermensch
04-27-2007, 05:15 PM
yay! Greyham got it.
Although most of them got the M4, the early versions used spare French ones the US had aquired in the first world war :)

I'm gone for the weekend, so I'll do another quiz Sunday.

Heh, assumed you had... they were advertising "Yum" brand foods (Sponser - owns KFC) non stop, and kept having a commercial stating that...

But eh... Horses like running, and making them go a mile 1/4 is hardley strenuous.

And once they turn four, those horses get to retire to go stud for 20 years... pretty sweet life if you ask me... Food and Sex...
