Alrighty then, as the title states, this is the thread for everyone that plays Cello. O' Beautiful wooden instrument, tuned in CGDA, how we all love thee.

Anyways, I've been playing for about three years with my school orchestra. So I'm now in eighth grade, and from my conductors statements, I've been playing high school level music (grade 4-6 I guess). So my recent and my favorite pieces are as follows: Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor (Bach), Viola Concerto in G major (Telemann), First Movement of Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 (Bach), Overture from The Barber of Seville (Rossini), and Concerto in D minor for two violins and piano (Bach).

Mozart is my favorite composer, Overture to Lucio Silla being my favorite piece of his. He's not on the list above though.

eBay, although from experience I don't recommend it. There are a few sites that have relatively cheap student packages, just gotta shop around.

I had a few sites, but I seem at a loss to find them, but this one (http://www.wwbw.com/Search/Default.aspx?Ne=4294940200&N=61+4294900652&Ns=p_Price%7c0) is quite cool :)

Slightly off topic, I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with geared pegs and what your thoughts are on them? There's a seperate thread, but I figured I'd plug :p

Hey, also in England, sorry; Giz a sec.

EDIT: These could do if there's a store near where you are? Stentor are quite a good starter brand IIRC

Plus there's the whole google and eBay bit, they could do you some good stuff if you shop around

Fair enough. Let us know how you go on :thumb:

Quick question; can anyone recommend some cool-yet-easy songs to play? I'm getting sick of all the same beginner songs.

Something challenging, but won't make my brain dribble out my ears :)
Cheers

Ok, I bought a cheap cello for $40 today off Craigslist. Missing a bridge and a broken tuning peg. I ordered strings, bridge, and bow off ebay today. Couldn't find a peg though. Where might I find that?

It's a pretty cool instrument. Definitely low-end (laminate top). I wanted it for parts to build an electric cello but will probably just play it as-is for a while to get the hang of it. Looks cool in the corner too.

its under scrutiny. a lot of people believe his second wife wrote most of suites, and he wrote the last few (they weren't all written at once), or some variation of that.

keep your thumb under your second finger when switching through positions,
Check intonation,
Vibrate with the whole forearm, not the wrist

It's kind of hard to get too specific on things without actually being able to show you.

i'm going to be the first one in this thread to themself playing. These are from a performance that my chamber orchestra did with some members of the Minnesota Orchestra. There are some cello solos and whatnot, so listen for those.

It should be obvious which one is me; luckily the girl who's father was making the video was right in front of me so i'm in the shot for the duration of most of the videos :I

quick note; most of the orchestra-wide intonation issues you hear in the videos are most likely the first violins' faults. shame on whoever didn't prepare their part.

Most violin sections I've played with have sucked so far; however, I'm playing with the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra right now, most everyone is amazing.

Got a new bow, it's a Coda bow; it plays amazingly. Plus, with the new set of strings I got (Jargar), my cello sounds great.

We've got a few Youth Symphonies and Orchestras around here, both of which rehearse 45 minutes from my house on weeknights which is not do-able. The orchestra i'm playing with in those videos, which is through my high school, is great anyway.

The bow looks decent. I use a Marco Raposo Pernambuco bow. It's basically this; mine's just a bit fancier (inlays on the screw and frog, larger pad)

Yeah, the Youth Symphony rehearses for two hours on Sundays, and for thirty minutes afterward I practice with the chamber ensemble; at the moment, I am playing Massenet's Scenes Alsaciennes, Howard Hanson's Symphony No. 2, and the Gregson tuba concerto. That's all with the symphony, I'm playing Mozart's clarinet concerto with the ensemble.

It's my second bow, and it's great compared to my old one; it's about time as well, considering my first bow has been broken for at least a year (cracked at the tip. it's one of those crappy fiberglass beginner bows with the rod in the middle).
