I think the 'it makes me feel cool' option pretty well fits into the first option, since it assuages fears of not being cool.

I don't own a weapons classified as a firearm.
Just a .22 pellet gun and an electric airsoft rifles (which looks real). I own them cause they are fun. The former for target shooting, the latter for shooting friends.
I live in DC right now, so there is no point in buying a real firearm, but when (if?) I move back to Maine, I'm going to buy a shotgun, as I've been wanting to take up duck hunting for awhile.
Maybe a handgun too, as Maine has very nice CCW laws.
I can't see rep bars... I didn't even know they existed!!

okay I admit I should have added that option. I forgot. but people whose guns make them cool can just ignore the poll and give me bad rep.

I own a gun because everyone knows that when someone breaks into my house and robs me, I'm likely to actually be in the house and have easy access to it (even though I'll lock it away because kids could get it). And also because if I don't go to my regular militia meetings the government will come up with all sorts of crazy laws. Like Guantanamo, or the Patriot act.
Edit: so basically this rep bar means I'm amazing or something? Never spied it before.

Although I don't have any right now, I will get one because it will protect my family and me. So I guess number one. And I will learn how to use it and respect its power.

Since I'm not 21 yet, I don't own a gun. I plan on purchasing a pistol for protection soon after I turn 21, though. Couple that with the fact that I intend to become a federal law enforcement officer (FBI, ATF, USSS, etc), I think that's a reasonable explanation for why I will own a gun.

With laws like that, people could join the army and be handed a higher powered weapon at a younger age. :p
Also, for me, I just think guns are interesting. I plan on buying a few at some point; however, they would mainly be for target practise. I am not big on hunting, but I am sure that I could see myself trying it out at some point.
Protection would come from owning the gun, but that would not be my foremost thought on buying a gun in the first place.

I go out with friends and shoot at targets. I'm sure I'll evetually take up hunting.
You have to be 21 to own a handgun. 18 for shotguns or rifles. At least those be the laws in Oregon and Washington.

I think that any rational person can protect themself without the need for a hand gun and karma usually plays a big part in peoples lives when they do own a gun.
Bless congress for eliminating every single gun control law that has ever even made it to Washington, BIG STEP FORWARD.

Most crime where you could protect yourself with a gun doesn't have that much forethought put into it. Crimes that do have a lot of forethought put into them are pretty hard to defend against. I don't think people who don't like guns are disproportionately represented in the people targetted for crime stat.
I suppose they might be more highly represented in the people on whom a crime was actually completed stat.

This is just lazyiness on the governments part. It is basically saying they cannot be bother to sort out the social differences in society and looking at the causes of crime and how to prevent it from happening in the first place. I know! Instead lets just give everyone guns so if there is a criminal then someone can shoot them and that is one less criminal to worry about in society! Ye-haw!
So sad. America has some of the highest crime rates in the world, guns obviously do not help, it is because America just totally forgets about the poor within their own country too busy trying to make other countries better or try and force them to comply with the capitalist system and American culture when they can't even sort out their own country. And then people are surprised when crime is so high in America when the government don't have any interests in its citizens, just its multi-national corporations and protecting its global domination. Moreover, people then wonder why so many other nations despise America and terrorists wanting to blow the **** out of it, because it is a simple message, leave us to run our own countries rather than trying to act as some parental figure in the world.
MattSharpIsCool
05-03-2007, 11:34 PM
You make it seem like America is the only country in the world with poor people.
I don't know why crime rates are higher in America. But I do know gun ownership really has no relation to crime rates.
pedro durruti
05-03-2007, 11:49 PM
I don't see how, given America's particular circumstances as a a society, the right to own firearms doesn't have have a significant effect on gun violence.
slashjunior
05-04-2007, 01:24 AM
Then that is a contradiction of terms. Most people on here say they have a gun to protect themselves against criminals and then you say that gun ownership has no relationship to crime, so why in fact do you need guns in the first place? From the sounds of it people own guns to try and lower crime rates, but it is evident that it doesn't help at all.
If someone came up to me in the UK and stole say my stole my wallet, all I have lost is say £30 cash, I can cancel all my cards and everything and inform the police who could possibly find them; one life saved, £30 lost. In the US if someone stole your wallet you simply shoot them and take back you wallet, no money lost and no need to cancel your cards, but one thing is lost that is worth way more than any material possession and that is a mans life. Basically Americans are saying their material possessions are so important to them that they are willing to kill a man to protect it. That to me is a very shallow way of thinking. Also take into account that if you fight back then you are more likely to get yourself shot, is it worth it for say protecting your iPod?

I have been a collector of guns, and antique rifles and shotguns since I was about 12 and my dad gave me a Japanese Bayonette from the war. I have over 50 guns now in good working order. I am 25 years old, I would not hesitate to use a gun to protect my family or loved ones.
I also respect the deadly force a gun can create and never mess around with my weapons.

Is that really an adequate counterexample? Switzerland's population is incredibly smaller than ours, they have a completely different culture (media, I might add, is a huge part of culture, and our media celebrates fear and violence as a form of entertainment, and has its other uses of course), and their longstanding defensive neutrality has probably had some effect on their citizenry.

Most gun-owning citizens aren't going to shoot someone unless they're threatened with a gun first. Believe it or not, most people DO in fact realize that shooting someone really does kill them. 99% of gun-owners never even fire their gun, except at targets or for fun.
Like someone mentioned earlier, in Maine nearly everyone owns a gun, but gun violence is pretty much non-existant. Same goes for Canada. I think I read somewhere there are more guns in Canada than people, but very rarely is there a gun crime.
If I'm getting robbed at gunpoint, I'm going to want something to even up the odds. I'm not going to automatically open fire on the guy, but if I have to, then so be it. Criminals will always have a way to get them. Why should they be the only ones armed?
