Ok, let's say that you love Dick Cheney very much. You have been his lover for many years, and you know each other's innermost secrets, passions, desires, and qualities, because you have spent hours upon hours of time with him over many glasses of wine and bowls of couscous. One day you are walking with him to Afghanistan, and suddenly a radical Islamo-fascist pops up out of nowhere. He's got a pistol, and the bodyguards are too slow to respond. He's aiming for Dick Cheney's heart, the heart that despite its faultiness, you cling on to dearly. What do you do?

If you are appalled by this scenario, just replace it with someone you really love. Would you sacrifice your existence for a loved one? And believers, just go along with me here. There is no god in this scenario, so you are guaranteed eternal black after death.

TBH I'd only do this if I could garauntee that by taking that one shot I'd save the loved one's life. If the person has more than one bullet then I would try to overpower him/her. Practically and rationally making such a sacrifice when it saves no one makes no sense other than as a useless symbolic gesture.

For the sake of the hypothetical situation, let's just assume the gunman is an excellent marksman and immediately after his first shot he will be gunned down himself.

Cain put it nicely. I would sacrifice my life for just about anyone. But if the person has more than one bullet, what is the point in taking the first?

EDIT: if he has only one bullet, then yes i would. like i said, i would do it for just about anyone, even if i hardly knew them. It would give me purpose.

Give you purpose? You'd be dead and gone, and only your legacy of being a hero would remain. And that, too, would die out eventually.

it's not guaranteed that i would die. But it is a chance worth taking. I wouldn't want to be known as that guy who "could/should have" saved cheney's life but wussed out.

Nah son, you miss the point. Just ignore that first paragraph, and focus on this question: Would you sacrifice your existence for a loved one?

Yes. You're going to die anyway, might as well save a person who's better than you, who will make more of a difference.

I'd like to think that I could make such a sacrifice for someone I cared so much about, however I believe that human psychology tends to mean people only truly know how they would react in extreme situations after they've been through them.

I dont think i would, as pb said you never can tell though. I dont think i could ever care about someone enough to end my own life for them.

This.

I have problems as it is caring about people, not to mention commitment issues to even have extremely close friends, but, for this situation, I have very few people to think about. So, in the end, I would probably still be living.
