I'll be straight up with this: this is a (somewhat cool) project I have for US History. I figured you guys would be an immesnse help in this, since I don't necessarily want to try and sort through 20,000+ songs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's the deal: I need to find one song for each period in US history (see list). The songs must fit one of the following:

♫ Be historically accurate for the time period (written or recorded in those years)

-OR-

♫ Address the specific time period directly

-OR-

♫ Have lyrics that can be interpreted to relate to the time period.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The time period are as follows, with possible ideas that could be addressed for each unit:

#1. Colonial America (pre-1776): colonies, Declaration of Independence, Revolutionary War, etc.

#2. Constitution and setting up a government: Articles Of Confederation, checks and balances, separation of powers, etc.

#3. New Nation (1789-1820): Washington, Jefferson, federalism, slave south, industrial north, etc.

#4. Expansion (1820-1850): Monroe Doctrine, west, Indian removals, war with Mexico, new lands, etc.

#5. Decade of Crisis (1850s): slavery, KS-NE Act, Compromise of 1850, John Brown, Lincoln, etc.

#6. Reconstruction (1865-1877): KKK, Freedman's Bureau, Jim Crow laws, north occupying south, etc.

#7. Gilded Age (1877-1900): big business, robber barons, Carnegie, Rockefeller, etc.

#8. Populists and Progressives (1880s-1900s): muckrakers, unions, Grange, etc.

#9. Imperialism and WWI (1989-1914): Spanish-American War, new territories, neutrality, mobilizing for war, etc.

#10. 1920s: consumerism, credit, new roles for women, new leisure, etc.

#11. 1930s: Great Depression, Dust Bowl, New Deal, Roosevelt, etc.

#12. 1940s-1950s: WWII, internment camps, cold war, prosperity at home, baby boom, etc.

#13. 1960s: Cold War, Kennedy, Johson, Vietnam, etc.

#14. Civil Rights (1950-1970): African Americans, women, youth movement, etc.

#15. Resturn To Conservatism (1970-2007): Nixon, Watergate, energy crisis, Bush/Clinton/Bush, etc.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want to help, please post the song title and artist, year if you know it, which period it relates to, and how it relates. Songs can be any genres, and from any year, so long as they somehow relate to one of the units.

I will try to rep everyone who comes up with good ideas. Thanks guys. :)

PS: I have until June 1st, so that's plenty of time to earn some rep. ;)

I could answer like half of those for Jazz haha. But which of those 3 themes do you most want to focus on?

More on the last two than a song from the time period.

12-15 should be way easy
Yeah, I'm not really worried as much about those. :p

Nice. Thanks guys.

btw, my teacher is offering extra credit if we actually burn her a copy of the CD. She said she might even play the CDs during the last few days of class.

I don't know if she'll like my music. :-\ :p

I think "The Idiots Are Taking Over" by NOFX would be perfect

We Didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel has a bunch of topics it names off in the song. We had to look up some of them in World History last year.

Yeh, but it has tons of references to big events.

Do the songs have to be pop-punk Bri?

No.

I want to try and mix it up a lot actually. And, it's a bonus if the lyrics are hard to make out, because then I can interpret them to fit my needs.

In all seriousness, Southern Man and The Idiots Are Taking Over would work really well. I'll think of other serious ones too.

while this is somewhat cliche/obvious, i do think its better, at least musically that Jack Johnson for 14

The Times They Are 'AChangin - Bob Dylan

and for 11, how 'bout Hobo's Lullaby - Woody Guthrie

not sure if this is actually helpful, but it felt necessary to me

The band is called This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb, and the song Jack Johnson is about a boxer, you nincompoop!

So you waste your time with s'hitty bands instead. Nice job!

And the types of music you listen to definitely determine if you have a life or not.

#5. Decade of Crisis (1850s): slavery, KS-NE Act, Compromise of 1850, John Brown, Lincoln, etc.

#10. 1920s: consumerism, credit, new roles for women, new leisure, etc.

#11. 1930s: Great Depression, Dust Bowl, New Deal, Roosevelt, etc.

Maybe this, fits new roles / better treatment for women.

#14. Civil Rights (1950-1970): African Americans, women, youth movement, etc.

Curtis Mayfield - Miss Black America
Marvin Gaye - What's Going On

Soul's good for that one.

For Slavery you could use Two Gallants - Long Summer Day

Mute Print
05-30-2007, 04:34 PM
I'm already using that for:

#6. Reconstruction (1865-1877): KKK, Freedman's Bureau, Jim Crow laws, north occupying south, etc.

The lyrics seemed to be from the point of view of a newly freed slave who was being discriminated against, so I thought it made more sense for that.
